Look, was Brown's response the "smart" thing to do? No. But, you can understand why he feels the way he feels.

On Thursday, Jaylen Brown stoked the flames and re-ignited the conversation about his relationship with longtime Boston Celtics teammate Jayson Tatum.

Brown called Tatum a liar in the comments section of a recent Tatum interview in which he talked about the trade of Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers and much more. However, until Brown speaks on the matter, it's unclear what exactly he thinks that Tatum is lying about.

Does he think that Tatum knew about the trade before he says he did? Maybe. Does he think Tatum greenlit the trade when approached by management? Maybe. Does he think that Tatum orchestrated the trade himself? Also maybe.

Again, until Brown speaks further on this, we won't know exactly.

However, until then, two things can be true at the same time.

1) Brown is being petty

Look, the "right" answer in all this is for Brown to be complimentary of Tatum in the same way that Tatum has been complimentary of Brown. The duo should both be appreciative of what they accomplished together and that should shine through publicly. And, in retirement, they should appear at events together, and they should both be present when the other gets into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

That's how this should go, and it would be better for everybody if it did, but breakups rarely work that way. And that's just the sad reality.

The other thing that's true?

2) I understand the way that Brown feels

Look, every time there is a breakup, somebody feels wronged. That person here is Brown, and it's easy to understand why he does.

Look at the facts:

For the nine years they were together, Tatum was clearly seen as the preferred player. The organization seemed to value him more. He was propped up as the face of the franchise. The fans were ready to trade Brown away in every mock trade they could think of. The media anointed Tatum as the face of the franchise and labeled Brown as many things, including a malcontent. And all of this while Brown was winning MVP in the 2023-24 NBA Finals and carrying the franchise in 2026 while Tatum was injured.

While maybe Tatum didn't do any of these things directly to Brown, it's clear that Brown feels some resentment and jealousy over how all this has played out.

And now, finally, that resentment has reached Tatum himself. Again, it's not the best look for Brown, but after years of being told you weren't good enough, it's understandable why he's running a little hot.

So, what now?

Like most divorces, the hope is that the initial problems will wear off, time apart will soften Brown up, and then eventually they'll reconnect on cordial terms. That's the hope, but I wouldn't expect it to get there for a while.

These two will play four times against each other in the regular season, and it will certainly be interesting to see how they react.
