The Boston Celtics rolled over the Memphis Grizzlies 131-95 on Wednesday night at TD Garden. The Celtics controlled the game throughout, outscoring the Grizzlies in every quarter.
Boston was certainly aided by the fact that Ja Morant didn't play for Memphis, but they got a dominant performance regardless of who was on the other side.
Five different C's players were in double-figures, including Payton Pritchard (24), Derrick White (20) and Jaylen Brown (19). Pritchard was 8-of-15 from the field and 5-of-10 from three-point range, a spot he's really struggled in thus far for the Celtics (6-7 overall).
As noted by Justin Turpin of WEEI, the +42 was the highest +/- of Pritchard's career.
Pritchard, 27, is taking on a bigger role this season in the absence of Jayson Tatum (injury), Jrue Holliday (trade) and Kristaps Porzingis (trade). He's averaging 15.3 points per game and 5.2 assists, but he is still just shooting 28.1 percent from three, even with his big barrage on Wednesday.
The team will hope that this is a turnaround moment for him, because they'll need him if they want to make noise in the Eastern Conference without Tatum.
After the game, Pritchard joked that he got a haircut before the game in order to switch up the vibes. He also said that he went into the game with a mindset to attack and push the pace and tempo.
Drafted in the first round (2020) out of Oregon, Pritchard is now in his sixth year in the NBA. He's averaged 9.3 ppg to this point and was a big part of the Celtics title run in 2023-24, averaging 9.6 ppg that season.
He's also seen himself grow and mature over the last few years. It wasn't that long ago that Pritchard wanted out of Boston because he wasn't getting the kind of role he wanted. Now? He's an NBA champion and a key leader on this roster.
The Celtics will have a few days off before taking on the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. ET. Considering that the New England Patriots play on Thursday night against the New York Jets, all eyes will be on the C's. The Clippers are currently a disappointing 3-8 on the season and the new duo of Kawhi Leonard and Bradley Beal just hasn't worked yet.
Leonard is averaging 24.3 ppg but has played in only six games thus far.
