The Celtics just brought in Devin Carter, and it looks like they had to find that roster spot somewhere.
Earlier this week, the Boston Celtics brought in former first-round pick Devin Carter, who had previously played for the Sacramento Kings. Carter will hope to make the official NBA roster, but he could certainly see some time in the G-League if he sticks in the organization.
Well, it looks like his opportunity had to come at the expense of someone else's, with Keith Smith of Spotrac reporting that the C's have waived guard Caleb Grill, who was signed to an Exhibit 10 deal previously.
About Caleb Grill
Grill spent parts of six seasons in college basketball, appearing in games as early as 2019 and as late as 2025. He began his career at Iowa State, staying one year before spending the next year at UNLV. He went back to Iowa State for two more seasons and then ended his career with two years at Missouri.
It appears that he took full advantage of the extra year that was granted to players who were in school at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as a redshirt year. He only played in nine games in 2023-24.
Interestingly enough, medical redshirts no longer exist because of the NCAA's new "aged-based eligibility" model, which says that athletes have five years to play five seasons, and that's it. He was the Sixth Man of the Year in the SEC in 2024-25.
For his career, he averaged 8.1 ppg, but he had 13.7 in his final season with the Tigers.
He'll now hope for another opportunity in the professional ranks.
As for the rest of the Celtics...
They'll simply move forward. Training camp begins on Sept. 29 as the C's look to follow up last season's 56-26 record and No. 2 position in the Eastern Conference. Unfortunately, Boston was beaten in the first round of the playoffs by the Philadelphia 76ers, and things look even harder for them this year.
Because of the newfound strength of the conference, teams like Detroit, Miami, Toronto, Indiana, Washington, Atlanta, Orlando, Philly, the Knicks and Cleveland could all be in Boston's way.
For the record, I've got the Celtics finishing fifth or sixth in the Eastern Conference this year.
After the start of training camp, the Celtics can focus on games again. The preseason opener is set for Oct. 8. There are four preseason games before the start of the regular season, which is Oct. 20 at Detroit.
