The Los Angeles Clippers are in the thick of the Western Conference play-in race at 27-29, and while Kawhi Leonard has been the engine driving the team forward, a pair of big men are quietly becoming a story of their own.

Since the team sent Ivica Zubac to the Indiana Pacers at the February 5th trade deadline, rookie center Yanic Konan Niederhauser has stepped into a bigger role, and veteran Brook Lopez has taken notice.

After Los Angeles' most recent game, Lopez did not hold back when it came to talking about the young Swiss center and the growth he has shown.

"Everyone makes mistakes in the game," Lopez said. "LeBron (James) with all the time, grace (he has in the NBA), he made mistakes out there tonight, (but) just keeps going. Everyone's got to do the same thing, and I think he's done a great job of that."

A Rookie Growing Into the Moment

When you are comparing a rookie to the way LeBron James handles adversity on the floor, that is about as high a bar of praise as you can set.

For Konan Niederhauser, who was largely buried behind Zubac and Lopez for most of the first half of the season, the stage has gotten a lot bigger in a hurry.

The 22-year-old out of Penn State was selected by the Clippers with the 30th pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, and through 34 games this season, he is averaging 3.8 points and 2.4 rebounds per game while shooting a remarkable 67.5 percent from the field.

Those numbers come in limited minutes, but the flashes have been undeniable.

In four games where he played at least 20 minutes, Konan Niederhauser averaged 12.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks, showing the two-way potential that made him a first-round pick.

His Rising Stars appearance during All-Star Weekend only added to the buzz, as he led all scorers with 11 points.

The Zubac trade opened the door, and Konan Niederhauser has been walking through it, with his role growing steadily as the Clippers push toward the play-in tournament.

Lopez Finds His Footing as the Starter

Lopez's own turnaround since the Zubac deal has been just as compelling.

After a difficult start to the season where he found himself out of the rotation at times, the 37-year-old has looked like a different player in the starting role.

He is averaging 11.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game since taking over, shooting 49.1 percent from the field.

He even put up 16 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks in 35 minutes during a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on February 20th.

Beyond the stats, his mentorship of Konan Niederhauser has clearly carried weight in the locker room too.

With Leonard averaging 27.9 points per game and the Clippers fighting for their playoff lives, every piece of this roster matters.

What Lopez said about Konan Niederhauser speaks to something bigger about this team right now.

These mistakes happen, the best players in the world make them, and what matters is how you keep going.

If the rookie keeps trending the way he has, Los Angeles could be a tougher out than anyone expected when the play-in rounds begin.
