Brandon Ingram will likely remain with the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Los Angeles Clippers are still waiting for the Kawhi Leonard trade to go through after agreeing to the deal back in July with the Toronto Raptors.

Leonard is expected to be traded to Toronto in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Grady Dick, and draft compensation.

Once it goes through, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Clippers have given no indication that they plan on trading Ingram. He did note that it is something that they could discuss as the season goes along, but as of right now, the plan is to keep him on the team when the season begins.

The Right Call?

Ingram has two years left on his deal, which pays him $40 million this upcoming season. He has a player option for 2027-28, which he can execute and earn $41.9 million that season. He would become an unrestricted free agent in 2028.

He just turned 29 at the beginning of September and was an All-Star last season, averaging 21.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.7 assists on 47% shooting from the field and 38% from three. Ingram has always been a strong offensive talent during the regular season, but his defense has been inconsistent, and he’s struggled historically in the playoffs.

With the regular season getting closer by the day, the market for Ingram probably isn’t strong as teams start to game plan for what their upcoming season will look like. By the time the season starts, the Clippers could find more value in Ingram as teams deal with injuries or inconsistencies that lead into inquiring about the second overall pick in 2016.

Ingram will be in a position to succeed in Los Angeles as he and Darius Garland will be relied upon to create the majority of the offense.

The Trade Hold Up

The trade was held up due to the league investigating Leonard and the Clippers for salary cap circumvention. After nearly a year, the league ruled that there was fault on the part of Clippers owner Steve Ballmer and other Clippers executives, but Leonard was not punished beyond having to pay $700,000 in restitution.

He avoided any suspension or voiding of his contract. The Raptors would’ve assumed any responsibility for Leonard’s punishment had they agreed to the trade before the punishment was handed down, meaning if he was suspended, he would’ve missed those games in Toronto.

It’s unclear when the deal will end up being made official.
