Will the Los Angeles Clippers retain Bennedict Mathurin?
As of now, the NBA has not made a final ruling on the investigation despite a report from ESPN claiming that the NBA found no evidence that Clippers owner Steve Ballmer directly funneled money to Kawhi Leonard via team sponsors.
The NBA stated that ESPN’s report contained “numerous and significant inaccuracies” and that “results in the matter will be made clear once the investigation is concluded.”
As of now, the trade that would send Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Brandon Ingram and Gradey Dick remains on hold.
While the Clippers wait for a ruling, they still need to settle matters with Bennedict Mathurin, who is a restricted free agent.
The Latest On Mathurin
According to Brett Siegel of Clutch Point, the Clippers are interested in bringing Mathurin back, but the Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls, and New Orleans Pelicans are also interested.
None of those teams have the cap space to send an offer sheet to Mathurin, who is reportedly looking for around $15 million per season, and it’s likely the Clippers would match anyone. Sign-and-trade scenarios could land Mathurin elsewhere.
The Clippers have plenty of first-apron space to re-sign Mathurin, and even more will open up if the Leonard trade is completed.
Mathurin was acquired from the Indiana Pacers at the trade deadline in exchange for Ivica Zubac. The Clippers also got Isaiah Jackson and what turned out to be the fifth overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. The pick was protected 1-4, but fell to fifth, going to the Clippers.
What’s Next?
The Clippers re-signed Bradley Beal despite the ongoing Leonard investigation, so they are not opposed to making moves until a ruling is made. Mathurin was the key piece in the Zubac trade as there were no guarantees they would also end up with the fifth pick and Keaton Wagler out of the deal.
Mathurin has proven himself to be a three-level scorer who gets to the rim and free throw line at a high rate despite only being in the league for four years. He averaged 17.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists between the Pacers and Clippers last season. He shot 37% from three with the Pacers, but only 20% from three with the Clippers, in part due to a toe injury he had been battling all season.
The Clippers likely want to retain Mathurin and are still the frontrunners to do so.
