The Los Angeles Clippers have slowly pulled themselves out of the bottom of the Western Conference, rattling off six straight victories.
The Clippers' sixth win in as many games came on Thursday night as they defeated the Utah Jazz, 118-101, to improve their record to 12-21.
After the game, forward John Collins was asked if he thought the Clippers were a good team right now.
"Damn right we're good team right now. It's about us maintaining a mentality of what we have to do every night. Everybody being together. That's what it's about. We know the talent. We have top 75 guys, we have champs, coach has won a ring. We have a lot of experience and know it all. We have to come together and win. That means the most," he said.
The Clippers have defeated the Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets, Portland Trail Blazers, Detroit Pistons, Sacramento Kings, and Jazz during their six-game streak.
Against the Jazz, Collins finished with two steals, a block, and 11 rebounds. During the win streak, he's averaging 7.2 rebounds, 1.4 steals, and 1.6 blocks.
After the game, Collins explained his extra attention to detail on the defensive end.
"Definitely been a big step for me, taking that defensive mindset and having a defensive mentality. A lot of credit goes to JVG [Jeff Van Gundy] and Kawhi (Leonard) being in my ear, just trying to help me grow defensively. It's actually been fun learning how to do things out there on the court."
"Trying to bring more effort and intensity to the defensive end. Tonight, it happened in the first quarter. Hopefully, I can do it all four quarters, every game. Everybody is happy," he said.
Kawhi Leonard is one of the best defensive forwards in NBA history, with two Defensive Player of the Year awards and seven All-Defensive Team honors.
Asked if there was any specific advice Kawhi has given Collins, he replied, "Not necessarily, but it's all about energy. His effort and willingness to talk to me and get me into the right spaces or to challenge me when he knows I can be doing better means a lot coming from Kawhi."
The two have only been playing together for a handful of games, but Collins is already building solid chemistry with his Hall of Fame teammate.
"He's obviously very accomplished on the defensive end. Him and JVG just challenge me and going over how to be better. It rubs off and hopefully leads to wins."
Despite their win streak, the Clippers sit just outside of the Play-In tournament, a game and a half behind the Portland Trail Blazers.
They'll play the Boston Celtics on Saturday.
