Keaton Wagler will have to adjust to the NBA's physicality in his rookie season.

Los Angeles Clippers rookie guard Keaton Wagler came into the league with concerns about his weight and how he would adapt to the NBA's physicality, and it seemed to be something that he struggled with after his first game in the 2026 Summer League.

Wagler, 19, stands at 6'5 and weighs 188 pounds, a relatively smaller frame for a player his height. In his first game in the Summer League, he finished with 7 points on 1-7 shooting from the field in 27 minutes of play.

The defensive pressure the Sacramento Kings put on him was heavy, and it affected the way he played. Wagler acknowledged he had a hard time matching the opposing team's physicality, and it's something he will need to work on moving forward.

"Just the physicality piece. That's something I have to be better at," Wagler said. Though this is an aspect of the game that will take time to improve, Wagler will get enough playing time to get used to the NBA's physicality in a hurry.

With the franchise moving on from Kawhi Leonard, Wagler's development will be one of the top priorities for the Clippers next season, and maybe the answer to most of his growing pains is simply more playing time.

When looking at the Clippers roster, Keaton Wagler is expected to start at shooting guard when the season starts. Other players like Bennedict Mathurin and Gradey Dick could contend for that starting shooting guard spot, and if Wagler continues to have games like these, he could come off the bench.

Whether or not Wagler starts does not matter; he will likely see the court often in his rookie season. While the physicality may have shocked him, it could also be the pressure on him to perform that could affect his play.

At Illinois, there were times when Wagler would attack the opposing big men up front, and he attacked the basket hard, scoring on all three levels in his lone season in the NCAA. He will need to add muscle, but the aggressive play style will still need to be a big part of Wagler's game.

Many prominent players have had similar weight problems early in their careers and have bounced back from them, and have become better players as their careers have continued. The Clippers have plenty of time to figure everything out with their rookie, and after one game of Summer League play, there is no need to overreact.
