Lawrence Frank speaks on the addition of Max Strus.
The Los Angeles Clippers have had a busy offseason with a number of twists and turns, and it isn’t close to over.
The biggest story of the Clippers’ offseason has been the trade of Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors, which hasn’t been made official because the NBA is investigating the Clippers, owner Steve Ballmer, and Kawhi over allegations of salary cap circumvention.
Though the trade is on pause, the Clippers have continued with their offseason, acquiring Max Strus from the Cleveland Cavaliers in a three-team deal that also included the Denver Nuggets. The deal was officially expanded to five teams, with the Charlotte Hornets and Washington Wizards being included, once it was made official.
Lawrence Frank Speaks On Max Strus
In the press release of the five-team trade, Clippers executive Lawrence Frank weighed in on the team acquiring Strus.
"We are going to be a highly competitive team this season, and Max will be a big part of it. He is a great shooter with good feel who can handle and pass. Max competes on both ends of the court, and his versatility allows him to play different roles with different groups. He fits anywhere, and we’re excited to bring him to L.A.”
Strus played in only 12 games last season, averaging 11.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, and two assists. He shot 44% from the field and 40% from three. He did play in 18 playoff games, averaging 9.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists on 40% shooting and 35% from three.
He missed the majority of the season with a severe Jones fracture in his left foot, which required surgery in August 2025.
Where Does Strus Fit?
Strus could end up starting at the two guard next to Darius Garland, depending on how the rest of the roster shakes out.
If the team can re-sign restricted free agent Bennedict Mathurin, he will likely start at shooting guard. Fifth overall pick Keaton Wagler has a chance to start, though the team might feel more comfortable bringing him off the bench in favor of Strus if Mathurin doesn’t re-sign.
Whether he starts or comes off the bench, Strus should see plenty of minutes next to Garland and Brandon Ingram as he provides spacing for both players and can attack off the catch.
Defensively, while he does compete and gives effort on that end, he is limited by his athletic ability and has trouble staying in front of quicker guards.
If he can stay healthy, he’s still a valuable piece for a Clippers team that will rely on the sum of its parts this season.
