Kawhi Leonard's contract won't be voided, but the Clippers still face a massive decision on his future.

Kawhi Leonard's future with the Los Angeles Clippers is one of the more complicated situations in the NBA right now, and it just got a little bit clearer. According to a report from The Athletic, the Clippers believe the NBA's ongoing investigation into Leonard won't result in significant punishment.

There's also no expectation that his contract will be voided. Leonard has one year remaining on his deal, which means the franchise is now staring down a decision that can't be avoided much longer. Do they extend him, or do they explore a trade?

That's the question sitting on Steve Ballmer's desk this offseason, and the answer is going to define what this franchise looks like for the next several years.

The Investigation Isn't the Problem Anymore

For a while, the investigation itself was the cloud hanging over everything. You can't really plan around a player when you don't know what his contractual status is going to look like. Now that the Clippers have reason to believe the league isn't coming down hard, that uncertainty clears up at least somewhat.

What's left is actually the harder question. Leonard is 33 years old and played just 37 games two seasons ago in 2024-25. When he's healthy and engaged, he's still one of the most impactful two-way players in basketball. We know he's one of the greatest players on the planet when healthy, but the availability piece is always the question.

Extending a player with that injury history is a real risk, especially for a team that had huge roster upheaval all season. Bradley Beal went down with a fractured hip in November, Chris Paul got sent home in December, James Harden was moved to Cleveland at the deadline. This roster looks nothing like what it did on opening night.

What the Clippers Actually Do Next

The way The Athletic framed it, Leonard's value has been re-established. That's significant because it means there's a real market for him if the Clippers want to move him. Teams are going to call. The question is whether Los Angeles picks up.

At this point, Leonard is essentially the entire identity of this franchise. Without him, the Clippers don't have a clear direction or a convincing pitch to free agents. With him, at least there's a conversation. But with one year left on his deal and his injury history what it is, the front office can't just run it back and hope for the best.

There's no easy answer here. But at least the investigation question seems to be off the table, which means the real offseason work in Los Angeles can finally begin.
