Demar DeRozan was waived by the Sacramento Kings, should the Clippers pursue him?
The Sacramento Kings decided to waive former All-Star small forward Demar DeRozan this offseason after the season in which the Kings finished in which they finished 14th in the Western Conference.
ESPN NBA insider Anthony Slater shared his immediate thoughts on which teams could be potential suitors for DeRozan, and one team could be the Los Angeles Clippers. DeRozan is from Compton, California, not too far from where the Clippers play.
Slater also mentioned how DeRozan could be a player that multiple teams will monitor this offseason, as he could be a reliable bench piece for a contending team. He started in all 77 games in which he played, but at 36 years old, he could be looking to play for a championship contender.
Should the Clippers Pursue Demar DeRozan?
Demar DeRozan is coming off a season in which he averaged just over 21 points per game on 47 percent shooting from the field. For much of his career, he's been known as an on-ball scorer.
If DeRozan is going to be a bench piece for a team, it's likely not going to be on the Clippers. While Los Angeles made moves to be a team that could sneak into the postseason in a competitive Western Conference, the team is not in a position for a deep playoff run yet.
Jonathan Hui-Imagn ImagesThe Clippers have to focus on the development of fifth overall pick Keaton Wagler, who is also a player who needs the ball in his hands to succeed, and adding DeRozan could hinder his development.
There is also a world in which there is mutual interest from DeRozan and his camp to come to the Clippers and finish his career playing close to home. The Clippers have recruited the likes of Paul George and Kawhi Leonard because they would be playing close to home, and those tactics could be used to bring in DeRozan.
In terms of where he would fit in the lineup, he could potentially replace Derrick Jones Jr. as a starter. The Clippers added Brandon Ingram and Gradey Dick in the trade that sent Kawhi Leonard to the Raptors, and there's a chance Ingram could slide into the power forward spot while DeRozan plays small forward.
Nick Turchiaro-Imagn ImagesLos Angeles has an opportunity to sign the former All-Star and get quality production from him, but if they want any chance to bring him in, there will need to be some mutual interest. DeRozan is likely landing with a contender, and the Clippers aren't there yet.
