The Clippers have agreed to move Kawhi Leonard, but the NBA’s ongoing investigation has left their offseason in a costly and awkward pause.
The Los Angeles Clippers thought their biggest offseason decision was done when they agreed to send Kawhi Leonard back to the Toronto Raptors on June 30.
Instead, it remains unofficial, leaving the club in an awkward spot as summer moves roll on.
The trade would send Leonard to Toronto for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round picks, a 2027 pick swap, and two second-round picks.
But the NBA will not let it close unless Toronto takes on the risk of any outcome from its investigation into the Clippers and Leonard’s Aspiration endorsement agreement. Toronto has chosen to wait.
Why the Trade Is Frozen
The league began looking into the matter last September after reports raised questions about a $28 million Aspiration deal involving Leonard.
The Clippers have denied funneling money to Leonard or breaking cap rules, while the NBA says outside counsel expects to finish in the coming weeks.
That leaves a deal that both teams want, but cannot complete.
Now, there is reportedly a second investigation opened into another aspect of Aspiration using Kawhi Leonard in mockups to promote their company, per The Athletic.
That could throw a wrench into the resolution and could even push the investigation conclusion further into the summer.
The Clippers laid out the league’s position in their explanation of the hold-up, and Toronto has no reason to accept a risk that could affect Leonard’s contract after he arrives.
Summer League Makes the Wait More Noticeable
The players have not hidden from the unusual situation in Las Vegas.

It also cannot explore a follow-up deal involving Ingram, who could be a key scorer or a trade piece for a reset.
That uncertainty makes it harder to set a cap plan, judge the rotation, or use assets in talks while other teams keep making decisions.
The Clippers went 42-40 and finished ninth in the West, while Toronto went 46-36 and earned the East’s fifth seed.
The Clippers still have time before training camp, but every day this stays unresolved limits their ability to turn an agreed trade into the next step of their rebuild.
