What is the latest on Bennedict Mathurin?
The Los Angeles Clippers have continued their offseason ventures and gained clarity on the Kawhi Leonard situation on Monday.
With it looking more likely that Kawhi Leonard will officially be traded to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and draft compensation, the Clippers can continue to round out their roster with a clearer vision.
The team has continued to make roster moves, most recently re-signing Bradley Beal to a two-year, $13.1 million deal that includes a player option on the second year.
The biggest piece of business left for the Clippers is the status of restricted free agent Bennedict Mathurin, who was acquired from the Indiana Pacers as part of the Ivica Zubac trade at the deadline.
The Latest On Mathurin
According to Marc Stein of the Stein Line Newsletter, "not much has changed" regarding Mathurin.
The New Orleans Pelicans, Chicago Bulls, and Milwaukee Bucks all have interest and are speaking with Mathurin's representatives for a potential sign-and-trade scenario, but the door remains open for him to return to the Los Angeles Clippers.
Mathurin was acquired alongside Isaiah Jackson and what turned out to be the fifth overall pick in the 2026 draft in exchange for Zubac. The Clippers got lottery luck to end up drafting Keaton Wagler at fifth overall, but Mathurin was the prize of the trade when it went down, as Los Angeles could've easily ended up with no first-round pick as a result of the trade.
The Next Step
Mathurin is reportedly looking at a deal worth around $15 million per season. No team has the cap space to make such an offer, which means a sign-and-trade is the only route where anything gets done if he ends up on a new team.
Given that Mathurin was the key piece in the Zubac trade, it's likely that they want to retain him. They have plenty of first apron space available to re-sign him, and even more will open up once the Kawhi trade becomes official.
While the Clippers don't want to feel like they are overpaying for Mathurin, he's shown impressive offensive ability in his first four seasons and on the biggest stage. He shot poorly from three as a member of the Clippers, though he was bothered by a toe injury throughout the season. His ability to get to the rim and draw fouls is amongst the highest in the league.
The Clippers hold the leverage at the moment as they'll either walk away with sign-and-trade compensation, or they'll find a way to get Mathurin under contract.
