The Los Angeles Clippers cannot replace Kawhi Leonard with one player if his pending trade to Toronto is completed, but Ty Lue has already identified the change that can keep the team competitive.
His praise for Darius Garland was not only about scoring or passing, but his energy and quick connection with a changing locker room.
Lue said of Garland, "Just him coming in, a fresh body, fresh face, he's always joking around happy. He has a good relationship with a lot of the guys in the locker room right away."
That relationship will not replace Leonard's production, but it gives Lue a base for a younger group that must learn to win in a different way.
Some nights will lean heavily on Garland, others could shift toward Ingram if the trade clears, and Lue will still need the rest of the roster to cover the space between them, especially when the game slows late.
Garland Gives the Team Direction
Garland averaged 18.8 points and 6.7 assists over 45 games last season, while shooting 39.6 percent from three.
He can turn the corner in a pick-and-roll, find a big man near the rim and make a pull-up jumper, which gives every lineup a clear starting point, creates easier chances for teammates and keeps the offense from settling.
For Lue, Garland already changed the Clippers' season, and a full training camp should help the coach build on that early connection.
Garland does not have to carry every possession, because his best value comes from setting the pace, moving the defense and making the next player more comfortable.
Ingram Would Add Scoring
Brandon Ingram would only join Los Angeles if the Leonard trade becomes official, which remains an important condition while the NBA investigation continues.
If the deal clears, Ingram would bring 21.5 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game from last season, giving the Clippers another player who can create against a set defense.
Ingram could become a long-term building block, but his first job would be simpler.
He must score efficiently, make quick decisions and let Garland organize the action, rather than trying to copy Leonard's game or control every late possession.
Competitive Does Not Mean Contending
The Clippers finished 42-40 last season, and their new roster still has clear limits, because replacing Leonard's defense will require several players and the group has little shared experience.
On the perimeter, Kris Dunn and Derrick Jones Jr. can lead the defense, while Lue will have to protect weaker matchups and find enough rebounding without slowing the offense.
The possible depth chart after the trade includes useful options beyond Garland and Ingram.
Keaton Wagler, Rui Hachimura, Dunn and Jones Jr. give Lue enough ball handling, shooting and defense to build lineups for different opponents.
That is not a promise to get to the playoffs, especially in a deep conference, but Lue's team can function without one player controlling every difficult possession.
The margin will be smaller without Leonard, particularly late in close games, and Lue will have to keep changing lineups until he finds enough defense without taking the ball out of Garland's hands.
