Why Clippers Should Have Pistons Free-Agent Jalen Duren on Their Radar

The Los Angeles Clippers were put in a tough position following their punishments in the salary cap circumvention investigation. The franchise was fined $30 million and lost its first-round picks from 2029 to 2033. 

Now, there is likely a shift in terms of how Los Angeles wants to build their roster for the future. They could be looking at finding players that will fill the potential voids they will come across in the future, and one player who can do so is Detroit Pistons free-agent center Jalen Duren. 

Duren has emerged as one of the top centers in the NBA thanks to his presence in the interior as well as his athleticism. Last season, he averaged 19.5 points per game as well as 10.5 rebounds, and that's the kind of production the Clippers could use in the coming years to stay afloat in the Western Conference. 

Defensively, he can hold his own as well as he averaged just under 1 block per game. Duren is still a very young player as he is only 22, and if he can play at his highest level on the Clippers in the coming years, that could save them from a lot of trouble. 

These next few years are going to be an uphill climb for Los Angeles, and they have added other free agents that will keep them competitive in the short-term future because of that. The team signed forward Rui Hachimura and traded for forward Brandon Ingram as part of the Kawhi Leonard trade. 

The Clippers also have Darius Garland projected to be the starting point guard, so it is clear this team is built to compete this season. The good thing about adding someone like Jalen Duren is that he's a player who can help you to compete now and in five years as well. 

Duren had some growing pains in the first round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs against the Orlando Magic, but he was still an All-Star caliber center this past season, and he could be even better in 2026-2027. 

If the Clippers want to find someone in their prime who can keep them afloat in the midst of a season with fewer resources, players like Duren are the ones who can help them do so. This is a team that is projected to compete for a Play-In tournament spot next season, but if they add Jalen Duren, that changes the outlook for many on this Clippers team.
