The Los Angeles Clippers won 50 games in the 2024-25 season, surprising many analysts who thought they were destined to be a lottery team. Even though they suffered defeat in the first round of the playoffs, they had a hard-fought series against a strong Denver Nuggets team, meaning this Clippers team was just a few pieces away, or so they thought.
The only notable departure this past offseason was Norman Powell, but the team brought in Brook Lopez, John Collins, Bradley Beal, and Chris Paul to improve their depth to appear as one of the deepest teams on paper in the league. However, for a team plagued by injuries, they didn't seem prepared for all the problems that headed their way.
Key players such as Bradley Beal, Derrick Jones Jr., Bogdan Bogdanovic, and Kawhi Leonard have all missed significant time this season, with Beal having been ruled out for the season. In addition, Lopez has become unplayable, while Collins hasn't wowed anyone with what he's done this season.
Only time will tell if Chris Paul was really getting to the bottom of these Clippers issues before his dismissal from the team, but from what the regular fan has been able to see, it seems as though this team is struggling to handle inconsistencies.
As was seen in a recent postgame interview with James Harden, the star guard was frustrated about the team's struggles with integrating players into the lineup who weren't expected to play roles, such as Kobe Brown, Kobe Sanders, and Jordan Miller.
Of course, constant losing isn't going to sit well with a top player like Harden, who is a regular in the playoffs, but his body language from the interview indicated sincere frustration with the state of matters with the Clippers. Tyronn Lue has always opted to play veterans over young players, and it seems as though that decision is catching up with him now.
On the topic of consistency, it seems as though the players around Harden and Leonard have struggled to produce alongside them at times, as one of the Clippers' most recent wins against the Charlotte Hornets saw Harden have to score 55 points to walk away with the win.
After making one of the biggest gambles in NBA history by wagering their future and trading a young star to the Oklahoma City Thunder to pair Leonard with Paul George, it seems as though the organization needs to finally waive the white flag and find a way to rebuild.
They've already put themselves in a terrible situation without control of their first-round pick outright till 2030, but the more they delay a fire sale, the worse things get. If the Clippers can find a way to move off players like Harden and Zubac for draft capital or young assets, they'll at least have a future with some sort of light.
At this point, it seems as though the Clippers are trying to make something out of nothing.
