Chris Paul spent years helping the Los Angeles Clippers become relevant, but his final experience with the franchise left him feeling that his contributions meant little to the organization.

Paul has opened up about the Clippers’ decision to send him home during the final season of his NBA career, describing the way his departure was handled as deeply disrespectful.

“What’s interesting about that whole situation is, it’s probably one of the most disrespectful things that I’ve endured,” Paul said. “I’ve been through a lot of wild stuff in my career.”

Paul returned to the Clippers in July 2025 after previously leading the franchise through its transformative “Lob City” era. He announced in November that the 2025-26 campaign would be his final NBA season, setting up what many expected to be a farewell tour.

Instead, his return ended abruptly in December after only 16 appearances. The Clippers sent Paul home while the team was on a road trip and announced that they were parting ways with him.

The decision was especially personal because of Paul’s history with the franchise.

Paul spent six seasons with the Clippers during his first stint, helping turn a long-struggling organization into a consistent playoff team. Alongside Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan, he gave the Clippers credibility and helped create one of the most memorable periods in team history.

Paul indicated that his family understood the circumstances surrounding the team, making the organization’s handling of the situation even more difficult to accept.

“Having older kids and a wife who’s very tapped in, and they know the daily goings on as far as that team and that organization,” Paul said. “Obviously I was upset, but my family, my people, everybody.”

Paul was later traded to the Toronto Raptors as part of a three-team deal in February. Toronto waived him shortly afterward, and he announced his retirement without receiving the celebratory ending many envisioned when he returned to the Clippers.

Paul’s frustration was not merely about losing a roster spot. His comments centered on how the separation unfolded after everything he and his family had invested in the franchise.

“I think just because of the investment we made in the team for as long as we have, and to see the way stuff was handled,” Paul said. “What it lets you know is that no matter what you do or what you’ve done, nobody cares.”

Professional sports organizations routinely make unsentimental decisions, particularly when a team struggles and searches for changes. Paul also held a limited on-court role during his return.

Still, the Clippers had control over how they handled the departure of one of the most important players in franchise history. They could have provided Paul with a dignified conclusion to his career and allowed fans to recognize his impact.

Instead, the relationship ended with public frustration and lingering resentment.

Paul’s Clippers legacy will remain far bigger than his final 16 games. His account of the breakup, however, ensures that the franchise’s handling of his farewell season will remain an unfortunate part of it.
