The Clippers will face the Lakers without five players as Darius Garland and the available rotation look to build on a convincing season opener.
The Los Angeles Clippers opened their season with a comfortable victory. Their next challenge comes against their city rival with several players still unavailable.
The Clippers have ruled out Bradley Beal, Brandon Ingram, Jordan Miller, Yanic Konan Niederhauser, and Max Strus for Friday’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers at Crypto.com Arena.
The five absences leave coach Tyronn Lue with fewer options as the Clippers attempt to follow their 121-96 win over the Sacramento Kings with another strong performance.
The Lakers also enter at 1-0 after defeating the Golden State Warriors 127-105. With both teams coming off decisive victories, Friday provides an early opportunity to evaluate their available rotations against another opponent building around offseason changes.
Clippers missing contributors across the roster
Beal is sidelined for right knee injury management, while Ingram remains out following right heel surgery.
Miller is recovering from left rotator cuff surgery. Niederhauser is out following right Lisfranc surgery, and Strus is unavailable because of a right plantar fascia tear.
The absences affect several different areas of the roster.
Without Beal and Ingram, the Clippers have fewer options to create scoring opportunities off the dribble. Strus’ absence removes another perimeter shooting option, while Miller and Niederhauser’s unavailability further reduces the combinations Lue can consider.
That makes the distribution of responsibility particularly important.
The Clippers need their available players to contribute without turning every difficult possession into a request for Darius Garland to produce a shot. Screening, cutting and quick decisions can help keep the offense moving when the first action does not create an opening.
Defensively, the challenge includes managing the Lakers’ ballhandlers without allowing their attention to drift away from the players finishing around them.
A shorter list of available players also gives Lue fewer alternatives if a particular matchup becomes difficult.
Garland and supporting cast offer encouraging starting point
The Clippers received meaningful contributions throughout their opening win.
Garland scored 30 points, Brook Lopez supplied 17 points and 11 rebounds, and rookie Keaton Wagler added 15 points, five rebounds and five assists. Those performances helped the Clippers establish control against Sacramento despite their absences.
The next step is producing that balance against the Lakers.
Lopez’s ability to contribute offensively will matter alongside his responsibilities defending the interior. Wagler faces another opportunity to make sound decisions as opponents begin evaluating his regular-season tendencies.
Rui Hachimura also offers a familiar presence for Lakers fans as he faces his former team.
For the Clippers, the objective is to make their available rotation function cohesively enough that the missing players do not dictate every possession. Their opener provided evidence they can generate offense from multiple sources.
Friday will test whether that approach holds up against a Lakers team with its own productive core and the possibility of adding Collin Sexton to the rotation.
The Clippers already know which five players will be unavailable. Their attention now turns to how effectively the rest of the roster handles the assignment.
