Cameron Boozer's Summer League debut caught Brian Scalabrine's eye, and the Grizzlies rookie also opened up on Memphis trading Ja Morant to Portland.
Cameron Boozer made his NBA debut in the Salt Lake City Summer League and caught the attention of a Boston Celtics fan favorite.
Boozer made his Summer League debut on July 4 as a member of the Memphis Grizzlies. Memphis defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder, 111-74, in the Summer League opener.
Boozer, who was selected No. 3 overall in the 2026 NBA Draft, caught the eye of Brian Scalabrine, a former NBA player and Boston fan favorite.
"He's going to help the team win," Scalabrine said on SiriusXM NBA Radio's July 6 episode. "He's not just a glue guy; he's actually going to be a player you can go to in certain situations. He's an excellent passer; he's not Jokić, but he has the ball in his hands, and you cut, it's a good chance you're going to get the ball."
Boozer's Memphis Grizzlies
The Grizzlies will enter the 2026-27 season continuing to rebuild, and Boozer is likely to be the face of the franchise moving forward. Memphis traded Morant to the Portland Trail Blazers on June 30, days after selecting Boozer, and Boozer commented on the trade on July 2.
"Obviously, I didn't know it was going to happen," Boozer said. "Ja is a great player. It's not our decision to make. It's the front office's (decision). I think we got a great young core. I think that's what they're looking to build off of, so I think (the future) is really exciting," he added.
Boozer continued, in comments shared by the Grizzlies, "Obviously, it sucks to lose a guy as good as Ja, what he's done for the city and the team, but it's part of the business."
The former Duke forward finished his Summer League debut with 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Throughout the game, he generated his own offense while getting his teammates involved.
Olivier-Maxence Prosper finished the game with 17 points as well. Memphis entered the half leading the Thunder, 66-44.
Moving Forward
During the NBA Draft, Memphis also drafted Karim Lopez at No. 21 and Richie Saunders at No. 32. On June 24, the organization acquired Isaiah Stewart from the Detroit Pistons.
Lòpez did not play in the Summer League opener due to a hamstring strain, and he will be out of the rest of the games in Salt Lake City, according to CBS Sports. Saunders will be out indefinitely as he is rehabbing an ACL injury.
The Grizzlies will play their next Summer League game on July 6 against the Utah Jazz at 8 p.m. CT.
