Sixers chase momentum against depleted Grizzlies as Joel Embiid's ankle sprain casts doubt on his availability.
The Philadelphia 76ers arrive in Memphis on Tuesday night in search of stability as injuries continue to complicate an already difficult stretch of their season.
Philadelphia has dropped three consecutive games and opened its five-game road trip with back-to-back losses, leaving little margin for error as the schedule tightens. The next chance to reverse course comes against the Memphis Grizzlies, but the availability of the Sixers’ most important player remains unresolved heading into tipoff at FedExForum.
Joel Embiid is listed as questionable due to a right ankle sprain and right knee injury management. While both issues appear on the official injury report, head coach Nick Nurse clarified before Sunday’s loss to Oklahoma City that Embiid was sidelined specifically because of the ankle injury rather than concerns related to his knee.
The ankle sprain occurred during Friday night’s 109-102 loss to Chicago, a game in which Embiid still played more than 32 minutes and carried much of the offensive load. Despite the injury, he scored 31 points on 10-of-19 shooting, underscoring how heavily Philadelphia relies on him even when he is less than fully healthy.
Through 13 games this season, Embiid is averaging 21.8 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists. His recent production has trended sharply upward, however, as he has averaged 29.8 points and 8.5 rebounds over his last four appearances. His potential absence again Tuesday would place additional strain on a roster already missing key rotation pieces.
Philadelphia will remain without Trendon Watford and Kelly Oubre Jr., both of whom are continuing their recovery processes. Watford is sidelined with a left adductor strain, while Oubre is working his way back from a left knee sprain. The Sixers said Monday that both players are progressing and have begun reintegrating into portions of team activities, starting with practice, though neither is expected to be available against Memphis.
The absences have contributed to Philadelphia’s recent skid, marking the first time this season the Sixers have lost three straight games. Without consistent lineup continuity, the team has struggled to sustain offense late in games and maintain defensive intensity across full possessions.
While Philadelphia’s injury situation is significant, Memphis continues to deal with an even longer list of unavailable players. The Grizzlies have already ruled out Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (hamstring), Brandon Clarke (calf), Zach Edey (ankle), Ty Jerome (calf), John Konchar (thumb), Scotty Pippen Jr. (toe), and Vince Williams Jr. (knee) for Tuesday’s contest. Jock Landale is listed as questionable due to a calf issue.
The injury landscape on both sides places added emphasis on depth, execution, and game-to-game adaptability as the two teams meet under similar constraints. For Philadelphia, the focus remains on managing Embiid’s health while attempting to regain momentum during a challenging road swing.
Tipoff between the Philadelphia 76ers and Memphis is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on Tuesday at FedExForum.
