Grizzlies star navigates trade speculation abroad, offering cryptic responses as his return to the court remains uncertain amidst injury.

Ja Morant kept his answers short and his tone measured on Wednesday as questions followed him overseas about his future with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Speaking to reporters in Berlin, Morant addressed trade speculation for the first time since reports emerged that Memphis is willing to listen to offers for the two-time All-Star. Asked how he has handled the possibility that the franchise could move him, Morant responded with three words.

“Live with it,” he said.

Morant traveled with the Grizzlies for their European trip and practiced with the team Wednesday, but he remains sidelined with a right calf contusion that has kept him out since Jan. 2. He said earlier in the day that he “hopefully” expected to play in one of two games against the Orlando Magic this week. Later Wednesday, the Grizzlies ruled him out for Thursday’s game at Uber Arena.

The calf injury has extended Morant’s absence to five straight games and capped another interrupted stretch in a season defined by limited availability. The 26-year-old guard has appeared in only 18 games, missing 21 due to injuries and a one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team following a postgame exchange with coach Tuomas Iisalo in November.

During Wednesday’s practice, Morant was seen in an animated exchange with teammate Vince Williams Jr., though the team did not address the interaction publicly. Morant otherwise offered few details, answering most questions briefly and declining to expand on the reports surrounding his status.

Those reports mark a significant shift in the Grizzlies’ stance. Sources told ESPN last week that Memphis is entertaining trade offers for Morant for the first time in his career, with rival executives believing the team would prioritize draft picks and young players in return. A year earlier, general manager Zach Kleiman had forcefully dismissed trade rumors involving the guard, emphasizing Morant’s central role in the franchise’s long-term plans.

Morant is in his seventh season with Memphis and remains under contract through the 2027–28 season. He is eligible this summer to sign an extension of up to three years and $178 million, a factor that could influence any front-office decision as the organization weighs its direction.

On the court, Morant’s production has been limited not only by missed time but also by efficiency dips. He is shooting career lows from the field and from 3-point range, contributing to a season that has lacked the consistency of his previous All-Star campaigns.

Memphis opened its two-game European slate Wednesday and continues the trip with another matchup against Orlando later this week. The team has not announced a timeline for Morant’s return, beyond describing his status as day-to-day.

Asked again about his readiness to play, Morant offered no update beyond his earlier comment.

“Hopefully,” he said.

For now, the Grizzlies move forward in Europe without their star guard on the floor, while questions about his future — and the franchise’s — linger unanswered.
