Phoenix Suns Not Interested in Ja Morant Despite Trade Rumors

The Phoenix Suns have no interest in trading for Ja Morant, a source says, even as the Sacramento Kings and Miami Heat show concrete interest.

The NBA Draft is two weeks and one day away, a point on the league calendar when trade speculation typically intensifies.  Among the players recently connected to trade rumors is Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant, whose future with the franchise has become a subject of discussion as teams around the league evaluate potential offseason moves.

Right now, the Sacramento Kings and the Miami Heat are two teams that have been reported to be showing "concrete" interest in the guard, according to The Athletic NBA Daily. However, one team that has been speculated to have interest in Morant has reportedly stated that they do not have interest in him.

Suns After Dark, Gerald Bourguet, who covers the Phoenix Suns, reported on June 8 that the franchise does not have interest in the Memphis guard. "Seeing the Ja Morant-to-Phoenix talk heating up again," Bourguet posted on Blue Sky.

"Already shot this one down a few weeks back, but a source reiterated today that the Suns are not interested in trading for Morant.

Recent Trades

The Suns, over the last three years, have made multiple trades to establish a title-contending roster, but were bogged down by a lack of chemistry and injuries. In June 2023, the organization acquired Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal in blockbuster deals to pair with Devin Booker.

Ultimately, the big three played 78 regular-season games together and four playoff games. Phoenix struggled to maintain a healthy roster and keep all three players on the floor.

After Beal reached a buyout from the Suns, Durant was traded to Houston. The franchise found itself rebuilding around Booker. As constructed, the Phoenix roster includes Booker, Jalen Green, Grayson Allen, Jordan Goodwin, and Collin Gillespie in the guard rotation.

The franchise finished second in the Pacific Division (45-37), but was swept in the first round by the Oklahoma City Thunder. Adding Morant would provide the franchise with a combo guard that averages 19.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, 8.1 assists, and shot 89.7 percent from the free-throw line.

Availability

While there are no reports that specify why the Sun has no interest in Morant, some critics and analysts express concern with his off-court history, lack of availability, and effort.

Morant has only played 79 games over the last three seasons due to injury and suspension. He played his last game of the 2025-26 season on January 21 against the Atlanta Hawks and finished the contest with 23 points, 12 assists, and 2 rebounds, while shooting 100 percent from the charity stripe.
