A report from Heat insider Greg Sylvander -- which, for the sake of clarity, came out the day before free agency began -- detailed Miami's interest.
"I’m told that the HEAT are fans of Memphis Grizzlies guard Cam Spencer and will explore ways to opportunistically acquire him as/if pieces move throughout the league in the initial flurry of transactions tomorrow," Sylvander wrote via Discord. "Just something to file away."
It should be noted that since that report came out, there has been plenty of movement around the NBA. The Heat have gotten in on some of that action, as they came to an agreement with veteran wing Tim Hardaway Jr. on a one-year deal.
As such, it's unclear whether the always-changing landscape still has the door open for Miami to potentially pursue a Spencer trade, but he would be a nice piece a squad that could use some shooters.
Spencer, who has only played two seasons at the NBA level, had a little bit of a breakout season with the Grizzlies in the 2025-26 campaign. In 72 appearances (20 starts), he averaged 11.1 points, 2.5 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game while shooting 47.3 percent from the field and 44.9 percent from long range.
He also led the NBA in free-throw percentage at 94.0.
Spencer is an interesting case, as he was just drafted into the league in 2024 but is already 26 years old. His age might limit his long-term trajectory a bit, but the fact that he spent so many seasons in college may also be part of the reason why he's already become a productive player at the NBA level.
Miami has been linked to tons of players since acquiring superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks, but it can only make so many moves in one offseason. The trade for Antetokounmpo should significantly elevate the Heat's ceiling in the Eastern Conference if the team can build a solid supporting cast around him and fellow star big man Bam Adebayo.
Spencer appears to be a name to watch for Miami -- if not this summer, then perhaps even down the road. The Grizzlies may able to flip him for a nice return, but if they see him as a part of their own future, they may be better off keeping him around in Memphis.
