Cedric Coward returned from a seven-game absence with 15 points in 21 minutes off the bench Saturday against the Los Angeles Clippers, and Memphis Grizzlies coach Tuomas Iisalo explained how the rookie's development will not slow down despite being a leader on a roster impacted significantly by injuries.
The Grizzlies lost 123-120, dropping their third consecutive game and falling to 23-39 on the season. However, for Coward, Saturday's game was another step in a long-term process that Iisalo has been building throughout the season.
Through 49 games, Coward is averaging 13.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.9 assists while shooting 46.8% from the field and 34.3% from beyond the arc.
Iisalo has established a clear development roadmap for the final stretch. Defensively, the emphasis is on point-of-attack containment by becoming more consistent against quicker perimeter players. Offensively, the staff wants to put more on his plate as a shot creator and playmaker, though the path to getting him those looks has not been straightforward, given Memphis's roster makeup.
"To a certain extent, most of those guards we have in the backcourt, their strengths are also in on-ball situations," Iisalo said Monday following a 110-117 loss at Minnesota. "I think Ced can improve in other areas too — movement off the ball and screen setting. That's a big part of today's game, to create those small situations."
Iisalo pointed to Coward's finishing ability as a weapon that can be unlocked through off-ball movement rather than isolation creation.
"He's a very good finisher from that in-between area," Iisalo said. "If he can catch it in the pocket or create closeouts through pick-and-pop situations or closeouts, that's good."
Iisalo compared Coward and GG Jackson, suggesting that the two players fit many of the same actions despite playing different positions.
"Some of the actions that we run for GG Jackson — who has been a nominal four for us — I think they also fit Cedric very well," Iisalo said. "Both are guys who can get downhill because they have that threat from the outside, but also a burst to get into the paint and finish from there, or spray it out."
Saturday's game was Coward's first action since missing seven games with a knee injury. Memphis dressed just 11 players, five of whom were point guards, creating a challenging roster imbalance that Iisalo acknowledged made it more challenging to involve forwards in the flow of the offense.
"One of the challenges we have is that we had five point guards on the roster out of the eleven players available," Iisalo said after Saturday's game. "So there are a lot of guys who are used to having the ball and creating for others. It can be a challenge to get Cedric involved. But I thought today we did it a little better — getting him and GG touches offensively, balancing their off-ball game while continuing to develop them as complete players."
The challenges have been visible in recent outings. In Monday's loss at Minnesota, Coward was assigned a rotation that included Anthony Edwards, Julius Randle and others in a single game. Edwards finished with 41 points and five steals. Randle posted a double-double.
"He had possessions guarding all the way from Edwards to Randle," Iisalo said. "He can definitely get better at the point of attack, and every young guy can get better at the rotations."
Iisalo has framed those matchups not as a liability but as the clearest available path to growth.
"I hope we don't take for granted the opportunity to play against teams of this level," Iisalo said. "That is the level every one of our players and our team is looking to get to. You only get there by experiencing it and understanding that this is a tough, veteran team that we pushed. But then we've got to have more consistency for the full 48 minutes."
The remaining schedule offers no shortage of high-level matchups for Coward to handle. James Harden, Jalen Brunson, and CJ McCollum remain on the docket, as do Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kevin Durant, and Nikola Jokić. Memphis continues to play without a significant number of rotation players due to injury, including Ja Morant, who missed his 20th consecutive game on Saturday with a left elbow UCL sprain. Santi Aldama was also held out Saturday after trying to give it a go in pre-game despite being listed as available earlier in the week.
The Grizzlies play next on Monday on the road against the Brooklyn Nets, with tip-off scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT on FanDuel Sports Network.
