Three takeaways from Memphis’ win in Utah, including Zach Edey’s foul trouble, Ty Jerome’s late response and valuable clutch reps for a young roster.
The Memphis Grizzlies beat the Utah Jazz 110-105 on Monday night at Delta Center, a night after winning at Sacramento.
Memphis is 4-0. Utah, which also lost the Oct. 21 opener in Memphis, is 1-3.
The Grizzlies led by 16 late in the third quarter. Utah got within a point twice in the last 3:37 but never tied it.
1. Zach Edey's Foul Trouble Changed the Interior Battle
Edey was called for an offensive foul 35 seconds into the second half, his fourth. Two minutes and seven seconds later, a loose-ball foul gave him his fifth.
He did not return until 5:40 remained in the fourth quarter. Edey finished with 4 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocks in 20:35, and all 4 points came at the free-throw line.
Mo Bamba played the entire fourth quarter for Utah. He went 4-of-4 in the period on three dunks and a putback layup, and he finished with 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 blocks.
In the fourth quarter, the Jazz outscored Memphis 18-2 in the paint. Memphis went 1-of-7 on paint attempts in the period.
Utah finished with a 46-34 edge in paint points. The Jazz grabbed 14 offensive rebounds and scored 15 second-chance points.
Isaiah Stewart played 15:22 and had 4 points and 4 rebounds. Quinten Post, who scored 12, did not play in the fourth quarter.
Memphis was called for 29 fouls. Utah was called for 21.
Cedric Coward said the Grizzlies were telling each other in the final minute that they love games like this one.
"We've got great guys on this team that show a lot of poise," Coward said in a walk-off interview after the game. "And everybody was telling each other, like, we're good in every situation. Even if we were fouling, which we've got to [clean] up, or we're allowing [O-boards], it's another thing we've got to [clean] up."
"But we are always telling ourselves that we're good, and we like these moments because it shows what we're made of," Coward continued.
2. Ty Jerome Stayed With It Through a Rough Shooting Night
Jerome entered Monday averaging an NBA-best 34.7 points. He had scored 45 in the opener, 28 at Golden State, and 31 at Sacramento.
Against Utah, he made 1 of his first 10 shots. Starting with a driving layup at 5:16 of the fourth quarter, he hit 3 of his last 5, including both Memphis field goals in the final 2:44.
Jerome finished with 15 points on 4-of-15 shooting. He went 1-of-6 from 3-point range and 6-of-7 at the line.
He also had 8 assists. Six of them set up 3-pointers, and two went to Jerami Grant.
In a postgame interview with Grind City Media, the Grizzlies' in-house outlet, Jerome said Utah was more aggressive in its coverages Monday. He has 119 points through four games.
3. Close Games Are Giving a Young Roster Valuable Reps
Two of the four wins have been decided by five points or fewer. Memphis beat Golden State 111-108 on Friday after trailing by 12 with 3:47 left.
Cameron Boozer, the rookie who went 2-of-15 in his debut, had 13 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists in 30:31 on Monday. He has scored 7, 25, 14, and 13 in his first four games.
Coward, who made the All-Rookie First Team last season, played a team-high 31:29 despite five fouls.
Memphis went 25-57 last season.
Grizzlies coach Tuomas Iisalo said finding different contributors each night is a necessity over an 82-game schedule, and he has described the bench as hard to guard.
"Every one of these games, as hard as it is for the nerves, for everybody watching at home and being in these games," Iisalo said, "[they're] also great growth [opportunities] to get these reps early in the season with, I think, [we're the] fourth-youngest team in the league."
"But to get our young guys also these reps there in the end is invaluable, not just for games, the next few games, but for the whole season and for the future too," Iisalo continued.
Memphis closes the four-game trip Thursday at Portland, with tip-off at 9 p.m. CT, before hosting Sacramento on Saturday.
