A three-team Ja Morant trade proposal ships the Grizzlies star to Minnesota and lands Memphis two young players to build alongside Cameron Boozer's arrival.
Memphis Grizzlies fans likely won't have to wait much longer for Ja Morant to be traded, and the move could come within weeks.
Not every NBA rumor can be trusted, but the whispers around Morant have grown too loud to ignore, and a deal looks inevitable.
The latest rumors suggest the Grizzlies will land a Trae Young-esque return for Morant, meaning an interesting young player or two and no future draft capital. That's not ideal, but at this point it's probably better for the Grizzlies to end this marriage, even if acrimoniously.
There are still scenarios in which they could extract some value for the star point guard, and this Roundtable writer has one in mind.
Grizzlies Land Some Young Talent in Morant Trade Proposal
Typically, I grade other trades in this space. I'll leave it to our readers to evaluate this one. Here's the proposal:
Brooklyn Nets receive: Julius Randle
Minnesota Timberwolves receive: Ja Morant
Memphis Grizzlies receive: Joan Beringer, Nolan Traore
Let's break it down team by team.
The Nets will be one of the league's only cap-space teams this summer, and they have no incentive to lose, given that they owe the Houston Rockets swap rights on their 2027 first-round pick.
That gives them reason to absorb a quality player like Randle into their cap space at the cost of a young player who is likely to be de-prioritized in favor of Egor Dёmin anyway.
The Timberwolves have been one of the teams most prominently linked to Morant. They would pair him with Anthony Edwards to form one of the most athletic backcourts in NBA history. It's a risky move, and giving up Beringer stings, but the risk is low relative to the potential reward.
If Morant can return to form, Minnesota becomes a much more dangerous team. Should the Grizzlies really risk watching him thrive with a conference rival?
Grizzlies Need to Move On From Morant
Some fans may wonder why this deal even involves the Nets, and why Memphis wouldn't just acquire Randle directly from the Timberwolves.
The reasoning is the draft. The Grizzlies are overwhelmingly likely to walk away from the 2026 NBA Draft with Cameron Boozer on their roster, and it would make more sense to hand him the reins from day one.
Adding Randle wouldn't be a disaster, but it would complicate matters. Rolling the dice on two young players with rotation-level potential fits the timeline better, so if the Nets can't find a cleaner way to improve their win-now prospects, gauging their interest in Randle makes sense for everyone.
Again, this would be an underwhelming return for Morant, but that is the reality of his current trade value. Bringing in two young players without tying up any meaningful cap space would be a coup given Morant's league-wide value.
If this deal is on the table, assume it gets done soon.
