With Cameron Boozer likely headed to Memphis at No. 3, the Grizzlies should think twice before taking Julius Randle back in any Ja Morant trade.
This should be an eventful summer for the Memphis Grizzlies.
There should be a changing of the guard - pun intended. The team is widely expected to trade Ja Morant, even if they won't receive optimal value.
They're also expected to draft Cameron Boozer. Assuming they do, they should be landing their next franchise player.
So, flipping Morant for a player who impedes his path to success could be a regrettable decision.
Grizzlies should avoid popular trade target
So, the rumors that the Grizzlies would bring the Timberwolves' Julius Randle into the fold are a bit concerning.
Granted, Grizzlies General Manager Zach Kleiman has his work cut out for him. Morant's trade value is likely at an all-time low. If the organization feels it must sever the relationship, finding a suitor who's going to send a favorable contract back will be a challenge.
That shouldn't mean accepting defeat. Boozer and Randle are a poor fit together. They're both fours, and Randle is ball-dominant. The Grizzlies should want the ball in Boozer's hands. Even with a limited range of options, they should be able to find a better arrangement.
Even doing nothing might be preferable.
Grizzlies shouldn't rush into Morant deal
Suppose the Grizzlies kept Morant to pair him with Boozer. Sure, they'd have to share the ball. It would perhaps be more optimal to pair Boozer with a three-point shooting floor general. But at least they don't play the same position.
Still, there should be better options. A Morant-for-Jalen Green swap has been floated by several outlets. New rumors indicate the Suns aren't interested in Morant, but all reporting at this juncture of the season should be taken with a grain of salt.
It's also been suggested that the Sacramento Kings could be interested in Morant. More recently, they seem intent on acquiring prospect Darius Acuff Jr. Still, they'd likely have to trade up from the seventh overall selection to grab him, and there are no guarantees that the Clippers or Nets will want to play ball. If the Kings miss out on Acuff, Zach LaVine would be a far better fit alongside Boozer than Randle.
Speaking of the Nets...
They're one of a few teams that will have cap space this summer. The Nets will have no incentive to lose either, as the Houston Rockets hold swap rights on their 2027 first-round pick. Could they be interested in Randle?
Ultimately, this is the route the Grizzlies need to find if they're going to send Morant to the Timberwolves. They need a third team. Otherwise, drafting Boozer and adding Randle in the same summer is simply counterproductive. If that's the best trade option they have for Morant, they should hang onto the point guard until a better deal materializes.
Even if it means their summer is a bit less eventful.
