DALLAS — Eleven in a row for the Atlanta Hawks after defeating the Dallas Mavericks 135-120 Wednesday night, and the winning streak keeps growing.
Tied for fourth in franchise history now. The only Hawks team to get further was the 2014-15 squad that ran off 19 straight with Al Horford and Jeff Teague — still the record. That team went 60-22 and won the East. These Hawks are 38-31 and chasing a play-in spot. Different circumstances, same determination.
CJ McCollum had 24 points. Nickeil Alexander-Walker scored 22. Thirty-eight straight games in double figures for Alexander-Walker, a career best, and his 64th such game this season has him tied for second in the whole league. Jalen Johnson put up 17 and 11 rebounds. Dyson Daniels got two steals — 42 games with at least two this season, more than anyone else in the NBA. Onyeka Okongwu opened the game by scoring Atlanta's first 10 points himself. Dallas never got in front. Up 37-30 after one. Up 67-56 at the half.
Then Kuminga threw one from 74 feet.
Third quarter, clock running out, Jonathan Kuminga grabbed a defensive rebound and let it go from near halfcourt. Went in clean. Officials reviewed it and confirmed it. Elias Sports had the numbers — longest made shot by any Hawk in the play-by-play era, sixth-longest by any player in the league since 1997-98. Jason Terry hit one from 63 feet against these same Mavericks on Jan. 5, 2000. That was the old record. Kuminga's was 11 feet longer. Six games with Atlanta. Four of those with at least 10 points. Wednesday: 16. Atlanta led by 19 heading into the fourth.
Twelve offensive rebounds on the night. Thirteenth straight game, Atlanta grabbed at least 10. Since the All-Star break, 13.8 per game — fourth in the NBA. The Hawks keep going after the ball and they keep getting it.
Dallas had its moments. Daniel Gafford shot 9-of-10 from the field for 24 points off the bench. P.J. Washington led the starters with 23. Cooper Flagg had 17 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Eighteen turnovers for the Mavericks, seven more than Atlanta. They dropped to 23-47.
Houston on Friday for the Hawks.
