Former President Barack Obama spoke to Steve Kerr about Jonathan Kuminga before the Golden State Warriors traded the swingman to the Atlanta Hawks.
Before the Golden State Warriors traded Jonathan Kuminga to the Atlanta Hawks, former President Barack Obama spoke to Steve Kerr about the Kuminga situation, according to Wright Thompson of ESPN.
Kuminga was a restricted free agent last offseason for a long, long time before the Warriors signed him to a two-year, $48.5 million contract.
"Coach!" Obama said, "What's gonna happen with Kuminga?"
Kuminga didn't have a good relationship with Kerr. The forward demanded a trade from the Warriors during the 2025-26 regular season and got traded to the Hawks in February.
In 16 regular-season games with the Hawks, Kuminga averaged 12.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. He helped Atlanta make the 2026 playoffs as the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference.
Meanwhile, Kerr and the Warriors missed the playoffs out West.
The Hawks lost to the New York Knicks in the first round in six games. Kuminga averaged 13.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per game in the six-game series.
Kuminga has a team option for next season worth $24.3 million. All signs point toward Atlanta and Kuminga continuing their partnership.
The Hawks appear to have a bright future with Kuminga, Jalen Johnson, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Dyson Daniels leading the way. Quin Snyder's group went 46-36 this regular season and had the 12th-best net rating in the league.
Kuminga enters next season with career averages of 12.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. He won the 2022 championship with the Warriors against the Boston Celtics.
