The Atlanta Hawks will be missing Zaccharie Risacher on Tuesday night, but the second-year forward appears to have avoided a more significant setback following a frightening fall that sent him to the locker room during Sunday’s comeback win in Phoenix.
Risacher, who landed hard on his left side while attempting a transition dunk in the fourth quarter, has been ruled out with a left hip contusion. He is considered day-to-day, and a person familiar with the situation said the initial outlook remains encouraging.
The injury comes as Atlanta prepares for one of its most anticipated matchups of the early season. A pair of major winning streaks will be on the line when the Hawks host the Detroit Pistons, who have won a league-best 10 straight games. Detroit’s surge continued Monday with a 127-112 road win over Indiana, highlighted by Jalen Duren scoring 31 points on 12-for-13 shooting with 15 rebounds in his return from a right ankle sprain.
Atlanta brings its own momentum, having won five straight — the second-longest streak in the Eastern Conference — after capping a four-game West Coast trip with a 124-122 victory over the Suns. The Hawks scored 20 consecutive points during their comeback from a 22-point deficit, with Nickeil Alexander-Walker delivering a season-high 26.
In discussing the team’s resilience, Alexander-Walker emphasized how the group has stayed connected despite injuries and fatigue.
“I just think we have a resilient group,” Alexander-Walker said. “I think we put our head down when we came together this entire trip. That’s one thing that’s really impressive is our mentality, our camaraderie around the team. Everybody pushes each other. Everybody accepts the accountability that we give, and when you do that, you get the results you like.”
Risacher’s fall occurred shortly after he intercepted a pass from Suns guard Collin Gillespie. He raced the length of the court and took off from just inside the free-throw circle, with two defenders trailing him. As he elevated for a two-handed dunk, his legs swung upward, sending him into a somersault before he crashed down on his hip and back. He stayed on the floor for several minutes before walking off under his own power.
After the game, he posted a brief message on Instagram: “All good. Nothing to be worried about. Thank you for all your messages. All love.”
The Hawks initially listed Risacher as questionable for Tuesday before downgrading him. His absence will be felt on both ends, with the 20-year-old averaging 12.9 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.5 assists while shooting 34.5% from three and averaging 1.2 steals.
Atlanta’s recent success has come without All-Star guard Trae Young, who has missed nine games with a right MCL strain. Jalen Johnson has posted at least 20 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in three straight contests, while Onyeka Okongwu has scored 20-plus in three consecutive games for the first time in his career.
Detroit arrives without Cade Cunningham, sidelined by a left hip contusion, but rookie guard Daniss Jenkins has helped offset the loss. Jenkins scored a career-high 26 points with eight assists on Monday and has averaged 21.8 points over his last four appearances.
This is the first of three meetings between the teams this season. The Pistons won three of four against Atlanta last year and swept both matchups at State Farm Arena.
