The Atlanta Hawks are continuing their busy offseason with a trade, according to a report from ESPN's Shams Charania.
The NBA insider reports that the Hawks are acquiring guard Devin Carter and a second-round pick from the Sacramento Kings.
It's unclear if the deal includes any other pieces.
Carter was originally a lottery pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. His tenure with the Kings now comes to an end after two seasons.
As a rookie, he appeared in 36 games and averaged 11 minutes per contest. The returns were iffy, as he posted 3.8 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game while shooting a mere 37.0 percent from the field and 29.5 percent from deep.
But he showed a little growth in his second season, averaging 8.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game while shooting 41.4 percent from the field and 26.3 percent from deep. He still only appeared in 38 games, but he made 12 starts along the way.
For a player who has only completed two seasons in the NBA, Carter is on the older side at 24. But there may still be some untapped potential in his game, as he showed at the collegiate level that he has a lot to offer.
A three-year player in college, his best season was his last. He was named the Big East Player of the Year as a junior with Providence College.
During that season, he averaged a conference-best 19.7 points per game to go along with 8.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.0 block per contest. He also shot 47.3 percent from the field and 37.7 percent from beyond the arc.
If he can tap into some of the tools that made him such a successful player in a power conference like the Big East, he may be able to turn a corner at the NBA level and become a nice addition for the Hawks.
Atlanta also can't complain about acquiring a second-round pick as part of the deal, an asset that could be used as a trade chip or to select a prospect in the future.
The Hawks are looking to take a step forward after making the playoffs this past season but being eliminated in the first round. Depending on how the chips fall, Carter could earn a spot in the rotation for Atlanta, but he will have to show that he's ready for an important role.
