The Atlanta Hawks largely stood pat while Eastern Conference contenders reshuffled, giving them a continuity edge entering 2026-27.

The Atlanta Hawks have a lot of strengths heading into 2026-27, but one stands above the rest.

It's not strictly about talent. Yes, the Hawks have plenty of that. They're one of the deepest teams in the NBA, but that's not the main strength that sets them apart.

Nor is it their defense — although the team's 108.6 defensive rating after last year's All-Star break ranked second in the league. That's a massive strength, but it's still not the Hawks' standout quality.

That would be their continuity.

Hawks Have a Continuity Advantage Over Most of the Eastern Conference

It's something I've discussed here before, but it bears repeating.

The Philadelphia 76ers are an entirely new team. They may have more talent than the Hawks, but time will tell whether LeBron James, Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe can share the rock.

They acquired Brown from the Boston Celtics, who will also look drastically different. They have the inverse problem: Paul George may be a cleaner fit, but the Celtics downgraded in terms of talent.

How about the Miami Heat? They added Giannis Antetokounmpo. It's a talent upgrade relative to who they moved, but is his offensive profile too similar to Bam Adebayo's?

The Toronto Raptors' addition of Kawhi Leonard feels like the cleanest major addition in the conference. They'll be formidable, but Leonard is known for getting injured. Fans should hope he'll stay healthy, but if he can't, it'll be tough for Toronto to overcome the Hawks.

In an offseason full of movement, the Hawks stood pat. They tinkered at the margins by adding Luguentz Dort, Aaron Wiggins, Dorian Finney-Smith and their draft class instead of chasing superstars. The conference shifted around them, and they watched.

Was it the right decision?

Hawks' Continuity Should Work in Their Favor

Absolutely.

Continuity is a real advantage. This Hawks team has a lot of chemistry, and none of the teams outlined above can say the same.

Does that guarantee Atlanta success? Of course not. Nothing can guarantee success in the NBA. Each of those teams is extremely talented, and we haven't even mentioned a Knicks team that won an NBA championship while also retaining most of its roster.

Luckily, the Hawks are also well-equipped to handle a disappointing season.

If they suffer another first-round loss, they have the youth and assets to make a major acquisition next summer. So, the organization's patient approach is the right one. They can hope that their continuity carries them to tremendous success in 2026-27.

It's the biggest advantage they have in the Eastern Conference.
