The Atlanta Hawks can't escape star trade rumors, but Golden State Warriors guard Steph Curry is a new one. He could be one of the most sensible suggestions we've seen all summer.
It's crazy to think about. Picturing Curry in any jersey besides the Warriors' feels too surreal to be possible. Yet trade speculation around Curry has picked up this summer.
The Warriors are light on assets. It's hard to imagine how they'll significantly improve the team around Curry for the remainder of his career. Could the Hawks actually be his final NBA destination?
Lindy Sports' Adam Martin recently proposed it. Let's take a look at the details.
Hawks Could Build Stephen Curry Trade Around Dyson Daniels
Martin doesn't lay out every detail, but he does provide a framework for a deal. He suggests Atlanta could send Dyson Daniels, CJ McCollum, Corey Kispert and draft capital to Golden State. Martin also mentions Jonathan Kuminga as an alternative piece who could be sent to a third team to help facilitate a deal.
Let's start with an obvious point: "Some draft capital" is probably at least a pair of unprotected first-round picks. Let's call it two. Daniels, Kispert and two unprotected future firsts feels like the start of market value for Curry at 38.
Should the Hawks make that offer?
Atlanta has already been warned against giving in to the temptation of a star trade. Curry presents a much harder decision than most of the names that have surfaced.
Hawks Must Think Carefully Before Trading For Stephen Curry
I'm leaning no, but it's a tough call.
To reiterate, Curry is 38. That's old. Moreover, he's already showing slight signs of decline.
He's still undeniably a superstar. Last year, Curry averaged 26.6 points per game while hitting 39.3% of his whopping 11.3 three-point attempts per game. Those are incredible numbers, but his 39.3% mark was below his 42.2% career average from deep.
He's still great, but he's not quite the game-breaking force that he used to be. That said, one could argue that the Hawks don't need him to be. They run their offense through Jalen Johnson, and Curry's elite three-point gravity would make life easier for Johnson.
It's tempting. Still, you'd have to feel like adding Curry gives the Hawks a strong chance to win the 2026-27 NBA championship to fully justify the deal. Otherwise, he's sure to decline in a couple of seasons.
Atlanta has been connected to other potential star targets such as Donovan Mitchell, but Curry's fit may make more basketball sense than most. His shooting would complement Johnson without taking the ball out of his hands on every possession.
So, for my money, I think it's smarter to hang onto Daniels and the first-round draft capital. That said, this is an intriguing, sensible proposal. If the Hawks decided to go this way, they'd be among the best teams in the Eastern Conference next year.
