Zaccharie Risacher is a steady three-and-D wing for the Atlanta Hawks, but he must add to his game to deliver on his No. 1 pick billing.
The Atlanta Hawks surely expected more from former number one pick Zaccharie Risacher.
Perhaps those expectations were unfair. Players do not choose where they're selected. Moreover, the 2024 NBA Draft was notoriously weak. Risacher isn't the only high lottery pick from that class who's falling short of expectations.
None of which will satisfy antsy fans. Risacher was picked first. The Hawks could have had Alex Sarr, Stephon Castle, or even Donovan Clingan. Risacher doesn't have to be a superstar, but he'll have to improve his game if he's going to make good on the Hawks' investment.
What might that look like?
Hawks Need Risacher to Produce
Let's start with some positives.
Risacher is a genuinely solid defender. He's not exceptional, but he's reliable. He also shot a respectable 36.8% from long-range last year.
That makes him an actual three-and-D wing. Those are rarer than some fans may perceive. Wings that provide positive value in both of those areas are valuable.
The problem for Risacher is how unproductive he otherwise is.
He picks up almost zero assists. He's a below average rebounder. Risacher has little ability to create his own shot as well. In 2025-26, 71.8% of his two-point field goals were assisted, and an astonishing 94.7% of his three-point attempts were.
So, there are two viable paths to improvement for Risacher. The more obvious route would be for him to learn to create his own shots, but that's easier said than done. Typically, players who can do that at an NBA level flash more potential than Risacher has at this stage of his career.
A more realistic path: Become a Swiss (or if you prefer, French) Army knife. Get more aggressive on the pass. Be more mindful of extra pass opportunities. If Risacher offered a more well-rounded package, it could go a long way for the Hawks. Even if he doesn't look like a number one pick, he could be a highly valuable rotation player.
Otherwise, he may not be in Atlanta for long.
Hawks Can't Wait Forever for Risacher
After all, the Hawks are on the rise. They were one of the hottest teams in the NBA after last year's All-Star break. This organization will want to continue moving forward.
If Risacher can't be part of that momentum, they'll trade him. We've already reached a point where that's a possibility. If Risacher has another lackluster season, it'll be an inevitability. He needs to deliver to meet the Hawks' standards, whether he can meet their expectations or not.
