The Hawks look like one of the best teams in the East. What's their most realistic outcome?
Atlanta Hawks fans are excited for the 2026-27 NBA season. They ought to keep the team's most realistic outcome in mind.
Unless they'd rather not. Go ahead, convince yourself the Hawks are championship-bound. There's no harm in it.
Besides, it's possible. The Hawks should be legitimate title contenders in 2026-27.
Still, their most realistic outcome has them falling a bit short of that goal.
Hawks Will Contend in 2026-27
It's difficult to project the Eastern Conference because it changed so dramatically this summer. Interestingly, the Hawks only retooled the roster at the margins.
And that could be to their advantage.
The Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat are the two new major players. The Sixers assembled a super team by flipping Paul George and picks for Jaylen Brown and signing LeBron James. The Heat added Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Naturally, that means two teams downgraded. The Bucks lost their longtime franchise player. They'll be starting a long-term rebuilding process in 2026-27.
The Celtics are a more interesting case. They're hoping George is a better fit than Brown, and that adding Mitchell Robinson will keep them afloat. They'll be good, but the Hawks ought to be better.
In fact, they ought to be better than any of these teams.
The Sixers will have more talent, but their roster is stacked with ball-dominant, low-defensive-impact players. They're an archetypal super team, but the Hawks' chemistry should give them an advantage over them.
The fit between Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo is suspect, and the Heat lack depth. So, the Hawks ought to be one of the best teams in the East in 2026-27.
But we haven't talked about the teams ahead of them yet.
Hawks Face Stiff Competition in the Eastern Conference
Let's start with the obvious choice. The NBA championship was won by an Eastern Conference team in 2025-26.
There's no reason to think the Hawks will usurp the New York Knicks in 2026-27. It's possible, but there's no logic that suggests it's likely.
The 60-win Detroit Pistons are also likely better than the Hawks. Granted, they traded Isaiah Stewart this year, and it's (somehow) still unclear whether they'll retain Jalen Duren. The Hawks can pass them, but it would be too generous to say that they're likely to do so.
Otherwise, the Hawks share a tier with the Cleveland Cavaliers and a Toronto Raptors squad that added Kawhi Leonard without giving much up in terms of win-now pieces. If Leonard gels with his (old) new team, the Raptors will be dangerous. The Cavs have similar continuity to the Hawks, so Atlanta needs some of its younger guys to step forward if it's going to be better than them.
Hawks Have a Realistic Path to the No. 3 Seed
I'll make a prediction: The Hawks should secure the third seed. The Knicks and Pistons will be one and two. The Raptors will take some time to gel.
Who knows? The Sixers have the talent to blow everyone out of the water. The Celtics could be better than the sum of their parts. The East is fiercely competitive, but the Hawks look as good as anyone outside of the Knicks and Pistons.
That should be exciting enough.
