A new Bleacher Report proposal lands Jaylen Brown in Atlanta, but at a steep cost. Here's why this Jaylen Brown trade isn't worth mortgaging the Hawks' future.
Whether you like them or not, it's hard to deny the logic behind the Jaylen Brown to Atlanta Hawks trade rumors. The moment Brown surfaced on the trade market, the Hawks emerged as a suitor, and why wouldn't they? Atlanta looked light on shot creation in the postseason; Brown is one of the NBA's premier shot creators, and the fact that he's a hometown hero only fuels the speculation.
That doesn't mean everyone's on board. Acquiring Brown would mean mortgaging the Hawks' future, and a new trade proposal from Bleacher Report's Zach Buckley shows just how problematic that could be.
Hawks Give Up Future for Jaylen Brown in New Proposal
Here are the details:
New Orleans Pelicans receive:
- 2026 first-round pick (No. 8, via Atlanta)
- Jonathan Kuminga
- Zaccharie Risacher
- 2028 first-round pick (via Atlanta, Cleveland, or Utah)
Atlanta Hawks receive:
- Jaylen Brown
- Yves Missi
Boston Celtics receive:
- Trey Murphy III
- Onyeka Okongwu
- Kevon Looney
- 2030 first-round pick swap (via Atlanta)
Let's be clear: this isn't an unreasonable proposal, and it's probably an accurate reflection of Brown's market value. That's exactly the issue.
If you think acquiring Brown vaults the Hawks into the NBA's title picture, power to you, and that optimism is admirable. From this vantage point, though, it doesn't seem likely. The Hawks are a young, talented team that can build something worthy of that conversation, but they shouldn't rush it. They should want more proof of concept before mortgaging their future, because otherwise they risk forcing a rebuild far too quickly.
Hawks Need to Hang Onto Assets
This isn't about Kuminga or Risacher. It's not even entirely about Okongwu, though he's exactly the kind of versatile, quality young player the Hawks ought to value. Mostly, it's about all that future draft capital.
Atlanta isn't flush with future first-round picks, and after this move it would be essentially bankrupt of them. The Hawks would be all-in on whatever roster they wound up with, and unless that group carries real NBA championship odds, that's a needlessly short-sighted bet.
To be fair, a core of Brown, Jalen Johnson, Dyson Daniels, and the rest of the roster would be good, undeniably so. It would be competitive, with a solid chance to make a conference finals run or two, and this trade wouldn't be an unmitigated disaster.
Even so, it makes more sense to simply take the player they like most at No. 8 and hold onto Okongwu. Kuminga and Risacher are both still young enough to improve, too. The Hawks have a bright future, and it isn't worth surrendering for the present this trade would buy them. They should stay the course, even if there's some logic in chasing Brown.
