With rivals fading and an offer already on the table, Miami’s pursuit of the Greek Freak intensifies. This "Antetokounmpo-or-bust" offseason defines the franchise's future championship window.
Miami, FL. – As the Milwaukee Bucks entertain offers for former Finals MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Miami Heat likely won’t be the only ones with serious interest. Despite only playing 36 games this past regular season, the opportunity to land a dominant superstar is too good to pass on for most organizations. Antetokounmpo will likely have a strong say in where he goes, if indeed a trade is to be done.
The Heat have been strongly interested in the 31-year-old for years, but this offseason could be the closest chance of realistically landing him. However, Antetokounmpo won’t move to South Florida without other teams getting involved in the sweepstakes. There had been rumblings about the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers potentially showing interest.
However, the latest news might prove otherwise.
Regarding the Celtics, the chances of Antetokounmpo moving to Boston are decreasing. The Cavaliers could have presented a challenge with the willingness to include former Defensive Player of the Year Evan Mobley in a potential trade package. However, the Central Division rival isn’t looking to part ways with the 24-year-old, according to the Stein Line and Jake Fischer, especially to Milwaukee.
The Cavaliers could grow desperate after getting swept in the Eastern Conference Finals by the New York Knicks, especially when blowing a 22-point lead in Game 1. As of this moment, the plan is to continue building around seven-time All-Star Donovan Mitchell and re-sign future first ballot Hall of Famer James Harden.
The Heat have the clearest path to landing Antetokounmpo. The Miami Herald reported that the organization already submitted an offer, but the Bucks are patiently waiting to hear out any other potential serious suitors. Franchise co-owner Jimmy Haslam told the media that a decision on Antetokounmpo’s future will be made close to the upcoming NBA Draft, where the Heat hold the No. 13 pick.
There is still likely some time before a trade comes close to being finalized.
The Heat are in desperate need of a superstar. They’re likely offering everything available, except three-time All-Star Bam Adebayo, including guard Tyler Herro. If the Heat are looking to return to title contention, especially within the Eastern Conference, missing out on Antetokounmpo would be considered an ultimate failure.
Also, the nine-time All-NBA forward has leverage in trade conversations, especially regarding destination. He is virtually entering the final year of a three-year, $175.37 million contract, set to make $58.46 million for next season, plus a $62.79 million player option for the 2027-28 season.
It’s Antetokounmpo-or-bust for the Heat this summer.
