Bam Adebayo claims the defensive rebounding record, but his sights are firmly set on surpassing Udonis Haslem for the franchise's all-time mark.

The Miami Heat's season has undergone several challenges, but Bam Adebayo continues to grow as a leader. The three-time All-Star is averaging 18.7 points on 44.9 percent shooting from the field, 33.8 percent from three-point range, 9.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.1 steals in 54 games thus far.

The team is coming off a dominant 124โ€“98 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday night. Adebayo led the charge with 23 points on 45.8 percent shooting, nine rebounds, four assists, tying a career-high six steals, and a block in 35 minutes. After the game, the 28-year-old became the franchise leader in defensive rebounds: 4,180 total and counting.

Despite breaking the record, Adebayo is eyeing another one: surpassing Udonis Haslem as the Heat's all-time total rebound leader.

"I'm on the way," he said following Tuesday's game. "He [Haslem] knows it. That gap is getting closer and closer. Being part of this organization, the guys ahead of me, records are meant to be broken, but they want you to earn them. Obviously, I'm earning it every game and [at] some point it's going to happen."

Adebayo was drafted with the 14 pick in the 2017 draft, same class as Jayson Tatum, De'Aaron Fox, Donovan Mitchell, and others who are still in the league. He's shown tremendous growth year after year, not only in production, but in character.

The nine-year veteran has been entrusted with many roles: backup, starter, anchoring the defense, scorer, and captain. Regardless of the situation, Adebayo has managed to fulfill them all. He's climbed the rankings of multiple records:

- Third in games played: 621

- Second in total points: 9,932

- Third in minutes played: 19,051

- Second in made field goals: 3,790

- Fourth in free throws made: 2,160

- Tied for third in steals: 666

- Fifth in blocks: 525

- Third in triple-doubles: eight

After trading Jimmy Butler at the 2025 deadline, Adebayo became the clear face of the franchise. He's accepted all responsibilities that come with it. The next step is to learn whether the 28-year-old can lead a team to a championship.

Adebayo has found success in the playoffs as a second option.

Also, the five-time All-Defense center will soon be paid to carry more responsibilities. The three-year, $161.35 million extension, with an average salary of $53.78 million, will begin to kick in next season.

The Heat have a homegrown star in Adebayo, but whether or not he can deliver will soon be answered.
