After Bam Adebayo eclipsed Kobe Bryant’s scoring mark, Miami Heat's Nikola Jovic claims he can top the new record as he enters a high-stakes, championship-or-bust season.

MIAMI, Fla. – Part of the reason NBA players find success isn’t just because of skills and talent, but because they have a great source of confidence in themselves.

Oftentimes, you’ll hear the phrase, “betting on myself.” It’s one of many examples of a player having a great level of confidence in themselves. However, too much can lead to massive egos and unforgettable quotes.

During the Miami Heat’s Media Day, several players were asked if they could surpass Bam Adebayo’s historic 83-point performance last season. While several gave a truthful answer, others decided to be bold.

“Of course [I can score more than 83 points],” Nikola Jovic said. “If Bam did it, I can do it too.”

Adebayo broke Hall of Famer, five-time NBA Champion, and Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant for the second-most points scored in a single game. The 18-time All-Star scored 81 points against the Toronto Raptors on Jan. 22, 2006. Bryant shot 60.9 percent from the field (28 of 46), made seven three-pointers, and 18 of 20 free throws.

Meanwhile, the way Adebayo did it has been viewed as controversial. On March 26, against the Washington Wizards, the 29-year-old scored 83 points on 46.5 percent shooting (20 of 43), made seven three-pointers, but this is the area fans bring up negatively. Adebayo made 36 of 43 free throws (both setting new league records). The three-time All-Star shows no regrets about making history.

Jovic’s career high in points is 29 from last season against the Portland Trail Blazers. Plus, he finished with nine rebounds, six assists, two steals, and a block. It’s Jovic’s most complete game in four years in the league.

If the 23-year-old is looking to break records, it starts with consistent production. Jovic often shows flashes of potential, but it needs to start being an every-game occurrence. Even with all the changes made to the roster this summer, the Heat believe in what the former first-round pick can deliver. Jovic is projected to have a role with the bench unit, alongside Bobby Portis Jr., Pelle Larsson, and Simone Fontecchio.

The Heat will be awaiting a return on investment this season. Jovic’s four-year, $62.4 million rookie-scale contract extension officially kicks in. There’s no longer playing the waiting game with Jovic’s development. The Heat have championship aspirations unlike in recent history. After the Antetokounmpo acquisition, several eyes are on the organization to compete for the Larry O’Brien trophy. Jovic’s contributions will play a role, regardless of whether history is made or not.

The Serbian forward is off to a promising start. Jovic finished with 11 points on 33.3 percent shooting, seven rebounds, four assists, and two blocks in 17 minutes against the Toronto Raptors in the Heat's 192-105 preseason-opening win. More will be expected throughout the year.
