Giannis Antetokounmpo joins Bam Adebayo to form a defensive juggernaut, while an upgraded bench and Nikola Jovic’s untapped potential signal a legitimate championship charge for the South Beach franchise.

MIAMI, Fla. – The one exciting aspect about the Miami Heat is “a superstar has arrived,” according to The Athletic, but is that it?

Here are three other things to look forward to ahead of the 2026-27 season and a week before media day:

Bench Production

The Heat could have the best depth in the Eastern Conference. Both Tim Hardaway Jr. and Bobby Portis Jr. have been in the top 10 of Sixth Man of the Year voting various times, including as finalists.

Pelle Larsson, whose extension was officially announced on Tuesday, is expected to take another jump in production. Coming off a breakout season and a historic summer stint in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 European Qualifiers, the 25-year-old will have an opportunity to carve out a Sixth Man of the Year campaign.

The Heat have historically struggled to find a stable backup center for Bam Adebayo, but Nick Richards could finally bridge the gap. He has a 6-11 and 245-pound frame, plus a 7-2 wingspan. The 28-year-old might have more room to grow and Erik Spoelstra is arguably the best head coach in the league at maximizing potential.

Nikola Jovic Unlocked?

Four years in the league and Nikola Jovic still has so much untapped potential. He has yet to play at least 50 games in a single regular season. Despite battling several injuries, Jovic has no room for excuses.

Like Larsson, the 23-year-old participated in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 European Qualifiers. In four matches, Jovic averaged 20 points on 66.7 percent shooting, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.8 assists. He’s a 6-10 and 205-pound forward with guard-like skills who can score on all three levels.

If Jovic finally blossoms, it makes the Heat’s bench unit more dangerous than projected. He will share the reserve frontcourt alongside Portis Jr. and Richards. Jovic will have opportunities, but the room for error might be thinner than before.

Dominant Duo

It’s no secret that Giannis Antetokounmpo is the superstar The Athletic is referring to, but the pairing of him and Adebayo should be a force to be reckoned with in the paint. They’ve both received at least five All-Defensive selections. Antetokounmpo and Adebayo should be enough to provide elite rim protection.

The Heat are among the early favorites to win the Eastern Conference and compete for the Larry O’Brien trophy. It’s been 13 years since the last banner hung in the rafters of Kaseya Center and a championship parade came through Biscayne Bvld. This upcoming season could end the drought.
