As roster cuts loom across the league, Pat Riley could bolster Miami’s depth by reuniting with a former standout guard or taking a flyer on versatile young forwards.
The Miami Heat's regular season begins Wednesday when the team hosts the Minnesota Timberwolves. The preseason concluded Friday night and the Heat have until Monday evening to reduce their roster to the 15-player standard contract limit. Miami waived a few young prospects on Saturday but a bunch of other teams are forming their rosters and waiving players who the Heat could show interest in. It may be unlikely for the Heat to make another roster move prior to Wednesday but there are solid players now available. With that out of the way, here are two recently waived players along with a former familiar face who would be solid additions to the Heat's rotation:
1. Kenyon Martin Jr., Minnesota Timberwolves
Martin, 25, was waived by Minnesota after their preseason concluded. He's had trouble finding a home over the last few seasons but he does have a strong presence at the power forward position. The Heat have Nikola Jovic as a backup power forward but after the Serbian disappointed last season following his lucrative contract extension, he may be on a short leash. It may not be the worst idea to bring in another forward and Martin could very well be that player.
2. Ochai Agbaji, New York Knicks
Agbaji, 26, was recently let go by New York. He was a part of the Knicks' offseason haul of adding multiple veterans on training camp contracts such as James Wiseman and Bruce Brown. Wiseman was the player to make the standard roster. Agbaji played last season with the Toronto Raptors but had dreadful shooting splits and was dealt to the Nets at the trade deadline. They are one team in the midst of a rebuild and still didn't view Agbaji as part of their future but Pat Riley could see some potential left in the Kansas product. With Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Norman Powell gone from the team as well, Agbaji could come in and maybe have a decent role almost immediately even as the 15th option.
3. Gabe Vincent, Atlanta Hawks
Vincent most recently played with the Hawks at the end of last season but is the only player listed here to not have been recently waived as the guard has been sitting in unrestricted free agency all offseason. The Heat could use another guard to back up expected starter Davion Mitchell, especially with Dru Smith's recent injury. He has familiarity with Erik Spoelstra's system as well and presumably wouldn't take too long to acclimate himself to the roster.
