Bam Adebayo’s recent praise for Jimmy Butler’s historic Miami Heat Finals runs signals a potential truce, reflecting on how their gritty partnership transformed the franchise despite a messy exit.
MIAMI, Fla. – It’s no secret that the Jimmy Butler saga and departure left a bad taste in the Miami Heat, including three-time All-Star Bam Adebayo; however, a recent podcast episode could show some healing.
As a guest on The Makeshift Podcast, when asked about favorite teammates, the former Eastern Conference Final MVP was brought up.
“You have to mention what Jimmy did in those Final runs,” Adebayo said. “That was just sheer will. Jimmy was putting his head down and going for it. Respect.”
Butler was the first legitimate star to pair up with the former 2017 lottery pick. Despite how things ended, their careers are linked to one another. Butler and Adebayo were the leaders of the Heat’s historic runs to the NBA Finals in 2020 and 2023, including three total Eastern Conference Finals appearances. Despite not having the most talented supporting cast, they made the most of it.
If the Heat hadn’t acquired Butler in a four-team trade, things would likely be different today. The main factor would be Hassan Whiteside’s contract being a complete failure rather than flipping it for a better return. It’s unclear which other superstar would be available for the Heat to go after.
Kawhi Leonard left the Toronto Raptors to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers; the Los Angeles Lakers acquired Anthony Davis in a trade with the New Orleans Pelicans; Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving both signed with the Brooklyn Nets; the Houston Rockets acquired Russell Westbrook in a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder; the Boston Celtics acquired Kemba Walker in a trade with the Charlotte Hornets; and the Clippers acquired Paul George in a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Butler’s arrival changed the Heat’s trajectory from a directionless franchise to a dark-horse contender, which benefited Adebayo’s development. He was able to step into a bigger role and thrive while handling more responsibilities on both sides of the court. Adebayo’s scoring has noticeably increased and he’s still one of the league’s best defenders.
Although the Heat and Butler are likely far from being on good terms, it wouldn’t be the first time.
In the 2007-08 season, Shaquille O’Neal’s four-year tenure ended with a fierce confrontation with former head coach Pat Riley at practice, which led to him being traded to the Phoenix Suns the next day. However, both Hall of Famers are on good terms today. The same could happen in Butler’s situation down the road.
