After an All-Star season in South Florida, unrestricted free agent Norman Powell was spotted training at the team facility, sparking rumors of a reunion despite looming salary constraints.

Miami, FL. – The NBA Playoffs continue to the second round, but the Miami Heat weren’t good enough to get invited to the dance. Following an underwhelming 43-39 regular season, the organization will have numerous concerns to answer, including what to do with Norman Powell. The 32-year-old is coming off an All-Star caliber season: 21.7 points on 47 percent shooting, 38 percent from behind the arc, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.1 steals. However, the issue came down to the lack of availability, appearing in just 58 games, including 52 starts.

Powell enters unrestricted free agency, represented by Jason Glushon of Glushon Sports Management. They have several other clients around the league: Orlando Magic’s Desmond Bane, Boston Celtics’ Jaylen Brown, Minnesota Timberwolves’ Donte DiVincenzo, and Detroit Pistons’ Duncan Robinson, among several others.

Despite not being allowed to legally negotiate a new deal at this time, the Heat could be hinting at a return for the veteran guard after posting a video of him working out at the Kaseya Center practice facility. In most instances, players attend personal gyms to conduct offseason workouts. Even with no guarantee of being on the roster for next season, Powell appeared in team gear and got a workout in.

The Heat are expected to go star-hunting, most notably targeting Giannis Antetokounmpo. It’s an interesting situation that continues to unfold, especially after Milwaukee Bucks owner Jimmy Haslam stated that a resolution is expected to be found before the June 23 NBA Draft.

If the South Florida franchise manages to land Antetokounmpo or another superstar, it would likely prevent Powell from signing a new contract with them and having to look elsewhere in the open market.

The first-time All-Star expressed interest in returning to the Heat, as stated at a Cadillac Formula 1 event in Pembroke Pines on April 28.

“Overall, I love my first year in Miami,” he said. “Enjoyed the organization, my teammates. Being a free agent, hopefully Pat Riley and the front office loved what I was able to bring to the table and expect to have me here in the future, next year, and so on.”

The Heat won’t have cap space in the summer, but they will be roughly $40.92 million under the first apron, along with having over $21 million worth of trade exceptions available. The organization holds Powell’s bird rights, which allow them to exceed the cap to re-sign him.

Whether Heat President Pat Riley and Gulshon can agree on a new deal has yet to be answered.
