Miami Heat legend Dwyane Wade says it's time for the franchise to make changes
Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade is the greatest player in Miami Heat history.
He proved that by helping lead the Heat to three NBA titles, becoming the franchise's leading scorer and reaching legendary status within the organization.
If anyone knows what's ailing the Heat, it's Wade. He recently spoke about it on his WY Network.
"They went from the Play-In to the Finals one year," Wade said. "It's insane. Yea, we're going to miss that. We're going to miss the sideline. We're going to miss seeing the Heat jersey in the playoffs. They need to retool. It's no secret that the Miami Heat need to retool."
The Heat are stuck in some sort of NBA purgatory. They made the Finals twice since 2020 but have yet to win a title. Despite having All-Star players, they were in the Play-In Tournament the past four years. One of those appearances did feature a remarkable run to the 2023 Finals, but the Heat remain a middle-tier team.
"They need to figure it out," Wade said. "When you've got All-Star talent around you, you just have to put the right mix together that can go out there and get yourself back to where you're accustomed to being and that's in the playoffs and that's competing for something. That's not just championships, that's in the playoffs competing for something. That's what you want. You want to give yourself a chance. We haven't given ourselves a chance overall. We've been in the Play-In the last four years."
This is a big offseason for Heat team president Pat Riley and coach Erik Spoelstra. They have to decide to keep the current core of Bam Adebayo, Tyler Herro and Norman Powell Jr., or go after a player like Giannis Antetokounmpo in free agency.
Wade said it's even further than the makeup of the roster.
"It's not that the talent isn't there," Wade said. "Those guys are talented. It's just the meshing of the talent isn't there ... When it comes to this unit and these groups that have been put together the last few years, it hasn't meshed."
