An arbitrator's ruling forces the veteran guard to surrender millions after betting allegations and federal charges derailed a short tenure in South Florida.
Miami, Fla. – Regardless of what can be said about the Miami Heat’s underwhelming regular season, one thing is for sure: Terry Rozier was not a factor. After the season opener against the Orlando Magic, the veteran guard was arrested on suspicion of illegal sports betting.
The case revolves around a March 23, 2023, regular-season matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans, when Rozier was on the Charlotte Hornets. He finished with five points, four rebounds, and two assists in 10 first-quarter minutes. Rozier would not return to the game with a foot injury.
As the case went on in court, the 32-year-old was prohibited from contacting members of the Heat and Hornets. Despite not playing basketball, Rozier was required to be paid his $26.64 million guaranteed salary, following an arbitrator’s ruling in early February. The reason was that the league couldn’t put him on unpaid leave.
However, the latest ruling is that Rozier must forfeit a majority of his salary from this past regular season. An arbitrator ruled that he breached an obligation to play for the Heat, thereby rendering him in breach of the agreement. Regardless of the forfeit, it doesn’t mean the organization will receive financial compensation.
Instead, a month after the trade deadline, the Hornets sent a second-round pick for the upcoming NBA Draft to the Heat to resolve the Rozier dispute. Realistically, it doesn’t come close to making up for all the damage caused.
The Heat acquired Rozier ahead of the 2024 trade deadline, sending Kyle Lowry (who was later bought out) and a 2027 first-round pick to the Hornets. Instead of providing an electrifying offensive spark, the veteran guard’s production began to diminish.
Rozier is facing two federal charges: conspiracy to commit money laundering and conspiracy to commit wire fraud–pleading not guilty to both. Before the latest arbitrator ruling, he was alleged to have accepted a $100,000 bribe to leave the 2023 Pelicans matchup early.
It’s highly unlikely that Rozier gets another opportunity to play in the NBA.
Despite officially being off the Heat’s financial books, the veteran guard took up cap space and a roster spot in a season filled with unavailability and trouble. Rozier will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, but remains prohibited from contacting Hornets personnel.
As the Heat close the chapter, the case is still ongoing. The front office is more focused on landing a superstar, with Giannis Antetokounmpo being the clear target.
