Could the Miami Heat make a play for Giannis Antetokounmpo in the offseason
Goran Dragic was one of the most beloved players when he played for the Miami Heat.
Fans adored him during his tenure because of his play and personality. They may love him even more after what he did on his latest podcast. He recently had Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo as a guest to talk about his upcoming summer that could result in a trade.
First, Dragic asked about his plans.
"You know how I am," Antetokounmpo said. "We are loyal people. It's very hard for you to turn your back but at the same time you're competitive. You want to win. Everybody wants to win."
Then Dragic offered some suggestions of places Antetokounmpo should considered.
"Can I say something," Dragic said. "You're 31 years old, so you need to think about your knees, to be loose. You need a warm climate, man.
Antetokounmpo wasted no time in offering a response. It should give Heat fans reason to smile.
"Hey, Miami's not a bad place," Antetokounmpo said. "Beautiful, beautiful city."
The Heat would need to include one of their stars in a package to make this happen. That likely means they'd have to part ways with Tyler Herro, Bam Adebayo or Norman Powell Jr.
Heat team president Pat Riley and coach Erik Spoelstra need to do something to get the organization out of purgatory. Despite making NBA Finals appearances in 2020 and 2023, the Heat have been a bottom-tier team since.
They were a constant Play-In Tournament candidate the past few years, losing in the first round in 2024 and 2025. This season, they lost to the Charlotte Hornets in the Play-In to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2019.
Signing a player like Antetokounmpo, a two-time MVP, would immediately boost the Heat's appeal. At this point, acquiring any player would help. The bottom line is Riley has to upgrade if the team is going to compete with the likes of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons and New York Knicks.
A move would satisfy a thirsty fan base but they also have to worry about the alternative. The Heat could simply "run it back" with the same roster because Herro, Adebayo and Powell didn't get to fully flourish because they only played a few games together because of injuries.
