The sharpshooter reunites with Andrew Wiggins in South Beach, sacrificing millions to chase a fifth ring alongside stars Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo under Erik Spoelstra.
KASEYA CENTER – Four-time NBA Champion Klay Thompson had his Miami Heat introductory press conference on Tuesday and here are the biggest takeaways from being in attendance.
Playing Alongside Dominant Bigs
The narrative surrounding the Heat was that the roster needed shooting. Despite already having several high-quality shooters on the roster, Thompson is among the league’s best. He’s fourth on the all-time three-pointers made list – 2,899 and counting.
Given the attraction of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo inside the arc, they will break down defenses and create open looks for Thompson from long range.
“I think we can [all] help each other,” he said. “I’m going to get so many great looks playing off [Giannis], Bam, and [Andrew Wiggins] because they create so much pressure getting to the basket.”
Reunion in South Beach
Although Thompson will have several new teammates, there was one familiar face. Wiggins was teammates with the five-time All-Star from 2020 to 2024. They won a championship together in the 2021-22 season.
When asked about who reached out first, Thompson answered Wiggins because “I think he’s the only one who had my cell phone number.”
“He made my job so easy when I was with him,” the 36-year-old added. “He’s such a great defender. I didn’t have to take the toughest assignment, like I used to.”
Repeated History
Around social media, Heat fans have compared Thompson’s signing to Ray Allen. Both sharpshooters joined the organization in the later stages of their careers. Allen’s addition led to championship success, including one of the most historic three-point shots in league history.
“I can see where people make that comparison,” Erik Spoelstra said. “Let this team have its own journey.”
It’s certainly been a unique offseason in Heat history. Four champions were added or retained, counting seven total rings. The Heat have more than enough championship experience to compete against elite Eastern Conference opponents, including the defending champion New York Knicks.
Financial Sacrifice
Thompson was set to earn $17.5 million from the Dallas Mavericks this upcoming season. However, he left money on the table to clear waivers and sign with the Heat on a new two-year, $13 million deal. Thompson has signed four contracts worth up to a total of $298.76 million in a current 15-year career.
Rather than gather earnings, Thompson made a financial sacrifice to compete for another championship. He played a significant role in the Golden State Warriors’ dynasty of winning four titles in eight years. Although Thompson was never a Finals MVP, the impact is undeniable.
“You want to maximize your earning potential, as an athlete,” he said. “I’ve tasted winning before and there’s nothing like it.”
Thompson is embracing a new chapter in South Florida. After two unpredictable seasons in Dallas, he’s seeking redemption. Thompson understands what it takes to overcome personal adversity and stand tall. It’s unclear whether he will start or come off the bench; regardless, the outside shooting mixed with several lineups is expected to result in winning.
It’s been 13 years since the Heat last won a championship and a parade came through Biscayne Blvd. Given the landscape of the organization’s offseason, with the financial flexibility to add a couple of more players, there are championship-or-bust expectations. The Heat are bringing back a 2010 feeling, but with different personnel.
