The Greek Freak breaks down the Miami Heat's "hungry dog" culture as he prepares for a South Beach debut, praising relentless depth.

MIAMI, Fla. – Head coach Erik Spoelstra has alluded to how the Miami Heat run things differently compared to other teams in the league and Giannis Antetokounmpo is starting to understand that better.

In a recent episode of the Thananalysis Show, a podcast hosted by the 10-time All-Star’s older brother, Thanasis Antetokounmpo, he’s gained knowledge of how the team prepares and why it makes them a difficult opponent.

“The 15th, 18th guy on the roster will be ready to play,” the former Finals MVP said. “We work so hard and the kid is in such great shape. When they step on the floor, they will be ready to give everything that they have. They’re like hungry dogs.”

As for several players in the league, an opportunity can come at any moment, but it’s up to them to show they’re ready for it. During the course of an 82-game season, players get injured, which leads to a test in depth.

Spoelstra is arguably the best head coach in the league at maximizing talent. Over the last four years, he has had a supporting cast consisting of undrafted players: Max Strus, Gabe Vincent, Caleb Martin, Duncan Robinson, and Haywood Highsmith. Usually there’s a couple on an NBA roster, but the Heat had a full rotation of them. Spoelstra managed to consistently have them ready, resulting in an NBA Finals appearance in 2023 as an eighth seed.

The Heat hardly shy away from effort, especially with the 55-year-old on the sidelines. Spoelstra doesn’t rule out changing rotations if it means having players on the court that can impact winning. He will give two-way players opportunities if they earn the opportunity for playing time.

Antetokounmpo is likely still adjusting to this new chapter of what’s to be a Hall of Fame career. He was with the Milwaukee Bucks for 13 seasons and the thought of him wearing a different uniform appeared highly unlikely, especially five years ago, when the franchise won its first championship in 50 years. As Antetokounmpo will soon make his official Heat debut, it’s the start of a journey in a new city, but with the same goal in mind.

Before tipping off the regular season, a preseason finale against the Orlando Magic at the Kia Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. E.T. Afterwards, it’s a chase for the Larry O’Brien trophy in a loaded Eastern Conference. The Heat are among the premier contenders, with all the significant roster changes during the summer.

Antetokounmpo will continue to learn more about the toughness of the organization throughout the season. Whatever challenge is presented to Spoelstra, whether it’s injuries or changes to the rotation, he has an answer for it.
