On Monday, former Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo officially became a member of the Miami Heat
Giannis Antetokounmpo is now referred to as a former Milwaukee Bucks star.
It became official on Monday that he is now a member of the Miami Heat. He made his first comments about the move during an appearance on ESPN's SportsCenter.
For Antetokounmpo, it seems he was ready to take a leap of faith rather than wondering "what if" after his playing days ended.
"I'm scared of change," Antetokounmpo said during the interview. "I'm scared that the grass is not always greener. People love me here, people respect me here, people allow me to be myself here in the city, and I'm scared that I might never find that ever again. I see guys playing deep into the playoffs and I think I'm like okay maybe if I switch teams and I go somewhere else and have a better opportunity I can play deep in the playoffs I can go chase another championship because I really want that and I'm scared that maybe if I don't take that decision that when I'm going to be 37, 38 years old hopefully I'm retiring I'm going to say why? Why you didn't take that risk?"'
Antetokounmpo leaves after playing 13 seasons with the Bucks. He led the franchise to a championship in 2021, defeating the Phoenix Suns. He also won two league MVP awards.
It seemed like Antetokounmpo was destined to playing his entire career with the Bucks, especially after winning that title. Things then changed once the Bucks failed to achieve the same success. They endured a few disappointing defeats in the postseason, including losing as the No. 1 seed to the No. 8 Heat in the 2023 playoffs.
After an injury-filled season where the Bucks missed the postseason for the first time since 2016, Antetokounmpo joins a Heat team that is perhaps one player away from competing for a title.
He teams with All-Star Bam Adebayo but the Heat lost a lot in the trade for Antetokounmpo. They are now without Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel'el Ware and Kasparas Jakucionis but can build around a talented frontcourt.
