It's no secret that the Miami Heat are being strategic in what trades the organization can potentially make as the deadline approaches. They currently don't have cap space, but are $7.2 million below the first apron, which gives them great flexibility for trades.
The organization has been reportedly linked to two-time All-Star Ja Morant. The 26-year-old is averaging 19.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 7.8 assists, and one steal while shooting 40.7 percent from the field, 23.5 percent from three-point range in 19 games this season. A divorce is trending between him and the Memphis Grizzlies, who have been reported to be entertaining offers.
Morant is making $39.45 million this season, with an average salary of $43.53 million over the next two years; there are no player or team options included. The Heat is looking to avoid acquiring big future salaries to maintain future financial flexibility.
It was reported on Friday that the organization is eyeing the 2028 potential free agency class, which consists of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, Donovan Mitchell, and many other All-Stars, pending any extensions.
It's worth mentioning that Heat's two-time All-Star Bam Adebayo could be part of that free agency class, unless he picks up his $57.77 million player option, which is part of his three-year, $161.35 million max contract and set to kick in next season.
However, with the future appearing to be a higher priority, it puts the present in a difficult position. The roster as constructed has fallen behind in the Eastern Conference, currently sitting with a 22-20 record, eighth in the standings.
The Heat's offense has gone through ups and downs, with not enough lockdown defenders to make up for it.
Also, regarding future salary, All-Star guard Tyler Herro was eligible for a three-year, $150 million contract extension. However, there was no agreement before the deadline. Then, there's Norman Powell, who's on an All-Star trajectory and in the final year of his contract.
On Jan. 7th, the 32-year-old became eligible for a four-year, $128.5 million max extension.
Also, the Heat signed Nikola Jovic to a four-year, $62.4 million rookie contract extension during the offseason, with an average salary of $15.6 million, fully guaranteed.
If the organization seeks to hunt for a superstar in the 2028 offseason, as reported, it would likely require some sacrifice of homegrown talent.
The Heat's quest for a fourth championship may require more patience than originally anticipated. It also takes Morant completely out of the equation.
